Sled Puller,

Building a transmission for a pulling truck wouldn't be too hard. But those engines in the midwest don't have enough low end grunt to pull it out of the hole. :) (them's fight'n words) hehe.

Enjoy!

Chris,

Go to http://www.diesel-central.com/Video/Video.htm

click on George Peterson, Lebanon Kt video. Nice shot of a midwest truck lighting his automatic- of course, it is a custom built auto by a hill jack in Kentucky, no fancy stickers on that one!

thepitts: Do I have to have the trans rebuilt just for that? 45000k on truck with no trans problems.

I think you can pull the trans and install any good Torque Converter and put it right back in. Don Ramer, at ATS (or any trans Guru) would be happy to give you the specifics. Don's number is 1-800-949-6002 But call 'em all.

A good TC will actually prolong the life of the transmission, for instance the 3 TripleLok clutches just will NOT burn, degrade or crumble like smaller ones can under heavy loads and high heat and higher H. P. It is those little bits of clutch material which can circulate into the trans and screw up the fluid-flow etc. , not to mention the TC clutch not holding any more--makes for a bad day!

I had mine trans completely rebuilt at 107,000 miles by ATS, and when they cut open my TC, it actually wasn't too bad. I could have gone another 10 thousand miles maybe, if I really drove carefully... but I didn't want to drive carefully! And I SURE as HECK didn't want to get stranded somewhere and go to Joe Blow's transmission shop and pay for what essentially would have been another stock unit. So I gave Don & Clint my money and it is the BEST upgrade I have ever done! I'd do it again in a minute!

Fireman Dave, 12/5/02, stated Goerend's tc was good for about 350 hp. This number was the accepted level for Goerend's standard milled stator tc. and not for the triple-disk unit being sold by Dave G.

I see your out of Alaska and running a Goerand Trans. I have been talking to Dave about doing my trans. and I live 1000 miles from his shop. Leaning towards shipping him my trans. and having it redone and shipped back. How did you do yours?

Thanks

TractorFace, I vacationed out from Anchorage to NC and other parts of the lower 48 in 2001 pulling the fifth wheel. I arranged my arrival time with Goerend for the upgrades and stopped by his shop enroute to NC. There is a nice state campground about four miles south of Goerend's shop in St. Lucas, Iowa. We (wife)took a small break and stayed there three nights. Don't miss read me, Dave had the truck for only one day.

I have never read a bad post about Dave goerend or his product. I beleave he might be the best choice on todays market. He also has the best warranty that I have read, I think it is something like 5 years or 50,000 miles. His ad is in the TDR along with his phone number.

Thanks for the clarification, Jerry. I was going off my rusty memory!:) I figured someone would have more accurate info.

Ron: I agree - Dave is kind of lesser known nugget out there. That's why I wanted to bring him up in the first place. :)

This is off the subject a little but with a cell phone and a good service plan it sure makes calling all these places alot easier on the wallet. In the past I use to pass up all the after market places that didn't have an 800 or toll free number, now I can tap into alot more of the market and sometimes better deals. It doesn't always pay to be cheap like me.

Ron

Dave G. is the best for a number of reasons: Excellent value, excellent product, excellent service before and after the sale, excellent warranty. I did a great deal of research before I chose Dave Goerend. I "did my homework".

Still thrilled with my ATS transmission

I've had the EarthRoamer from Alaska to Baja this past year in conditions ranging from below zero to over 100 degrees, from long haul freeway driving to continuous four wheel drive off road travel. My TripleLok and ATS transmission continue to perform perfectly. Driving with the TripleLok always puts a smile on my face!

This is the torque converter Dodge should have put in our trucks.

I would expect any transmission to be impressive when it is new, compared to stock with about 130000 miles. Time and use will determine the “WOW”.

It appears that some members of TDR are getting secret parts in their transmissions. Their post make claims that the vender don’t even make  . I find it interesting at what some of our fellow member’s claim their transmissions cost. I think they should be more specific in what they had done to their transmission.

I have absolutely no complaints with my transmission, installer or builder.

I can say this because I am not angry with the company, so no reason to whine :{ .

A second reason is because I did not receive a FREE transmission, so no reason to hold back  .

I must admit, I am a little disappointed that I didn’t get a free “T” shirt. I guess that will give me something to complain about. I did get a “RED” billet hub, how many of you can top that?

Yes, without the "T" shirt and even though I had to pay for it, my transmission is the best choice.

Jim Fulmer posted:

"... There is a reason why these guys are losing multiple torque converters. It is usually due to leakage within the transmission and or the valve body or transmission case. "

I've heard and/or read that from many sources including Dave Goerend and Bill Kondolay.

The first time was over 10 years ago by the guy that rebuilt the TH-350 for my chevy van. Internal leak and clutch pack fried. That rebuild only cost me $150 including a recon torque converter.

I considered my transmission options.

The only remaining decision is when I can get back to Goerends for a TC & VB update.

DShowman

Who did your install? With the mileage on my truck, I'm going to do a complete transmission. I spoke with ATS and they will ship me a transmission, ready to bolt in and then I ship mine back. I'm not sure if DTT or Goerend will do this too?

Did you go complete or just an upgrade?

Chris

HC, both DTT and Goerend will ship you a transmission , ready to bolt in. They are NOT plug and play though, none of them are. There will be some set-up (read: fine tuning) that needs to be done and you would need to do that if you bought a crate transmission. Who you go with would determine what you needed for tools and knowledge to complete the set-up correctly, each builder has some tricks and techniques that they believe in. The builder would talk to you and determine if they are comfortable with you doing the set-up. Their reputation and money are at stake if you did not do it correctly and hurt something, so I think they are justified in "qualifying" who they let do the tweaking.

Jim Fulmer is 100% correct in that internal leakage is a trannies' worst enemy, the loose nut behind the wheel is the second.

I have driven both DTT and ATS with about the same horsepower setup. I looked at every aspect between the two transmission's before I made my decision. They are both excellent transmission's but ATS came out on top. ATS much smoother and positive shifting and the electronic controller lock-up is awesome. I had it put in at ATS in Wheat Ridge, Colorado so I would know it was done right. At 20K, I'm as happy as the day I had it put in.

Hummin Cummins, It's a long story, but because of the extended warranty I had, the local dealer did the overhaul with Dave's parts and many hours worth of Dave's expert advice. That dealership charged me for those hours the tech spent on the phone learning from Dave. Dave spent all that time and made nothing extra. I really shouldn't complain because the warranty Co. paid for most of the rebuild but that $200+ extra I paid the dealer still irritates me. My transmission is fairly complete and good up to more HP than I will ever make. Dave G. is the man

edit: I know this thread was about a question in deciding between ATS and DTT... Sorry ... No more Goerend Banner waving from me

Today is the one year anniversary of my DTT transmission installation by Bob Berends in Greeley, CO.

The 32,000 miles I ran this past year included daily driving in traffic, towing a heavily-loaded horse trailer through the mountains twice a month, fourwheeling to the aquamarine mines near the peak of Mount Antero (a Colorado 14'er), slogging through mud and bumper-deep snow with chains on all fours elk hunting. I hauled hay, horses, cows, a huge portable calving barn on skids (pics in my gallery), and made multiple 14. 7s/90mph runs down the Bandimere Speedway 1/4 mile at the Rocky Mountain Truckfest. I didn't have to leave Colorado to operate in temperatures below zero and above 100. I've never seen my transmission temp gauge above 210 deg, on the hottest day pulling a load in traffic. In 90% of my driving, the needle sits on the left, at or below 140.

My truck commutes, works, and plays. It hauls, and it hauls a$$. I wouldn't have any other transmission.

And I know a couple of guys that can't say that. But they don't post here...
