As some of you know back on February, 15 the transmission was removed due to some problems. When the transmission was pulled away the flex plate was in two pieces. After contacting Bill at DTT I made arrangements to have it shipped to him so he could have it checked out. In the days following I had talked to several people about it one of which was Eric Mcbride, in my opinion with is concern for the safety of drag racers he contacted SFI. The day Bill received the flex plate I was contacted by Reactor who wanted some details.



As of Thursday March 31 I had not heard one word back from Bill at DTT so I took the liberty of contacting him. Well after a long heated conversation this is where it stands (I will make it short and sweet) Bill claims that the damage happened while the motor was not turning, I need to also state that according to Bill, Reactor, SFI, and NHRA all agree that there was no rotational damage. So the damage happened by either just sitting in the garage or there is foul play involved, and I would stoop so low as to put the flex plate in a press and cause the damage myself. I asked Bill what he intended to do and he said nothing, and there will be no refund, and we will not give you a replacement. Now he did say that had I not gone to SFI and handled it with him on a "hush hush" basis he would have worked something out. Funny how he couldn't get it through his head that I was not the one who contacted SFI and I did not tell anyone to do so.



I could care less if I got a refund or a new flex plate (would not bolt another one of the same design in my truck because I know it can fail)

What I am concerned about is my safety, and the safety of my fellow drag racers. Bill kept refereing to Reactors impeccable history at building SFI approved flex plates and my comment to him was that I don't think they fully understand the effects of the massive torque that a Cummins can apply.



A warning to those of you who are running one or who are considering buying one be aware that mine failed, and the failure did not happen because the motor was not turning, and I certainly did not intentionally break it. It broke because of the tremendous load being placed on it from Drag racing, doing burn outs etc.



I can assure you Bill that this is not over, and you should not let your tremendous ego get in the way of some "very serious" safety issues, and those safety issues are about your DTT Reactor "SFI" approved flex plate and what steps need to be taken so someone doesn't get hurt in the future when another one fails. Based on your findings and accusations can you imagine the ramifications if another one failed and a driver was hurt. I will close this post with this question Bill. Is DTT, Reactor, and SFI willing to take that risk without further testing on the current design?

It's possible that it was broken almost all the way thru and the spiking at shutdown (same thing that causes belt chirp) finished it off. This scenario would show no rotational damage, correct?

Wow DTT not at fault

Wow I never would have guessed their response to that! LOL. I Feel that DTT makes a very good product, but I disagree with there sales philosophy. Instead of selling your product by telling, showing how great it is, bash others products and scare the public that they have to have DTT upgrades or their trannies will fail. I have read several posts from DTT about how crappy the 47RE/48RE is. I wander how many Dodge engineers DTT has talked to? I mean if Dodge wanted to make a firm shifting transmission they could, but if DTT would contact chrysler they would realize that 90% of the people do not even want to feel the transmission shift, 90% of the people feel that good shift quality is smooth. Now most of the other 10% are on this board. Imagine what Dodge could do to this transmission if you paid them $3500 more for a transmission. Heck for less than $1500 extra they could make a transmission that blows the doors off of almost any aftermarket transmission, but the market does not dictate this. This wasn't intended as a bash, and I am no tranmission expert, but I just get tired of seeing DTT tell everyone how poorly the DCX transmission is , as well as other transmission houses poor design. Same philosophy at work, excell in the work place by doing your job well, not making others look bad. Once again I think DTT has some very good stuff, but just don't like the way they "scare" people into upgrading.
 
not to start a heated debate but i think that dtt simply tells the truth, further research and reading information will support this statement. you can take their advise or leave it, they build a great product, have excellant tech support and have built a great rep. as for dodge building a better trans, they probably could but if they built a transmission that would last then they would loose money, correct. one tha fails most people take it to the dealer to have fixed, great example with the ford 300 six cylinder, it lasted to long so ford stopped making it. plus dodge always seems to be 2 steps behind every other company (except on the motor contract) with no 4 door and crappy autos, it is a money saver to put the same TC behind the diesel as the gasers. just another side of the story to look at, good day to all.
 
When the flex plate broke did it take out the front pump??



I am getting the feeling that when ever you have a problem with DTT that you need to take care of it quietly and not talk about it.



Are there any other manufacturers out there that make a SFI approved flex plate??

Yes my post is all about the flexplate. I do not run one of their trannys and I made no reference about them in my post :rolleyes: Please if you will point out where I talked about a DTT transmission.

I don't want to sound facieses but, did you forget to un-bolt the flex plate from the converter? :eek:
 
i am fully aware of what you run and why you run it, that is not the point, and i never said that you talked about a dtt trans as an entire unit. this just seems like a subject that you should have taken care of privately (which you did for the most part) but you didnt have to bring the negativity that i gathered from your post to this board. that is all i was saying. if i misunderstood your post and it wasnt meant to be negative then i am sorry, i and i am sure others just get tired of the politics that go along with this hobby.
 
Let me point out a few things that some spectators in this might not be aware of.



1. Maddog is sponsored by a competitor of DTT.

2. Maddog's competitor now has a Flexplate that he isn't running and that isn't SFI certified.

3. Maddog on a different thread says that he doesn't even run his sponsors TC. Yet proudly runs his sponsors stickers for all to see. :eek:

4. Instead of contacting the person that sold it, or built it, he tries to get there (manufacturer) certification taken away by going to SFI.

5. The major governing body for NHRA safety (SFI) says that the flexplate had no rotational damage. (meaning not broken while engine was turning)

6. You tell the manufacterer of the plate that this broke in a 7000lbs. 7sec truck. (as far as I know this truck hasn't even been close to the 7's yet. 10's or even 9's is a long way from 7's, although hopefully one day you get there)



Although you have done one thing that you said "That if dad (Bill) didn't give you another Flexplate you would TRY and make his business suffer". Blackmail is crappy when it doesn't work.



My question to you was why would you want another Flexplate if you were so scared that is was dangerous. :rolleyes: And why would have lasted the whole race season, then all of a sudden break once your sponsors flexplate was ready.

When Dad(Bill) posted about the "48RE designed to fail thread" that some said was BS (mostly all guys that have never built a trans or even seen the inside). One of the first calls that he got was from the transmission department of DODGE, they discussed it and have now (I believe) fixed the thrust washer problem. :) Which I feel is great the they stepped up.



You are right about Dodge building this transmission to suit the 90% that love these trucks stock. That is what I tell all my customers that call saying that an OEM trucks transmission suck. Most members on this site aren't stock and for alot of them it does suck though, but that is because of what they have done (increasing HP).

So SFI has looked at the flexplate and that was their conclusion, not just Bills?
 
I run both a REACTOR and a J W flexplate, Mine has held up great, I was worried when this happen, and sent mine out to NDI lab, and the results are that its is ok, I have run REACTOR or JW flex plates on my race motors for years, the worlds fastest Alcohol funny car has a BRUNO and a COAN converter, and a Reactor flex plate “NO CUMMINS ON THE PLANET MAKE EITHER THE HP OR TORQUE of that funny car motor , guess of about 3500 hp and 2700 torque , and it uses a off the shelf Reactor Flex plate .





Here is my reactor flywheel. And here is an 1135 hp 800 torque 454. That turns 10,400 thru the traps. if you notice in the back ground you can see a very used , light weight Reactor Flywheel. this same Flex plate had over 500 laps on it over 4 years . Also if any one needs the motor is a Steve Schmidt 454 olds DRCE . it has fresh rods and pistons , and both a Schmidt manifold , and a HRD manifold . motor in AED trim held the record for a long time , and has went a best of 6. 71 @ 196 take 10,000 was 55,000 new



My experience with racing id there is no warrantee, if it breaks racing , that is on you , but most manufactory will fix the problem if you give them honest data to better their product , and not drag their name thru the internet.



I do not know DTT , but I do know the reputation the Kondolays have in NHRA circles , and it is above reproach when it comes to safety ,

Sounds like Eric McBride was the one calling SFI, Stefan.

Comp, am I reading that right? You say no Cummins has more than 800 foot pounds of TQ?
