Will it cause any damage to my dually if I take the outside tires off and just run with a srw? I live in Fairbanks and the roads are really slick, and some people have done that in the past. I can't afford six studded tires and I was trying to come up with alternate ideas. As it stands now, my truck is all over the road in the am.

Thanks

I've seen folks do this before. I dont see how it could really hurt anything as long as your not towing or hauling up to the GCWR. Just air up accordingly and put a little weight in the bed and you should be alright. Look funny sure... but it'll work.

Maybe in the future you can get some cheap steel rims, say 7 or 8" wide with normal back spacing. That way you could get some good winter tires for the rear and they would track in the same grooves as the fronts. Would look better than single dually rims too.

You will be amazed at the difference if you single out. Our duallys really skate when it is slick out, single rear has double the weight per sq inch. As long as you don't overload your tire rateing you will be fine.

I do that every winter

I went to a used tire/etc place and got a pair of dished (dually) wheels for the fronts and a set of 2500 rims for the rears. I tried just taking a set off the rear, but the tires don't track in the same rut, so you still wander and lose some of the benefit.

The 2500 rims need different lug nuts, cone shaped instead of flat since they guage their centers off the lug/nut, not the center hub. Other than that, it works great. The front end is still quite heavy though, and if on a side hill in slick snow with no bottom to grab, it tends to slide down hill, even with fairly severe traction tires...

I ran that way last year for a while and it helped a lot on icy roads, but deep snow was still squirlly. .

I bet a 2x4 would be real fun. .
