My son told me that his buddy just picked up his new $38K Duramax last week from the dealer. He started to drive home and the truck started to shake and he had no power. He got it back to the dealer (about 2 miles). Found out that some car jockey filled it with gasoline. They gave him a loaner while they drained the tank. I would have told them to keep the !*&* truck. Ya gotta love them dealers !!!!!!

 DRAIN THE TANK?! The damage has been done. I would definitly make them eat that one and demand a new truck or better yet, make them make me a heck of a deal on that used 12valve Ram on the trade-in lot :D

Wait a moment gentlemen (and I use this term some what loosely :p ) I have read this one before.

No not this thread but other ones on the chevy diesel site.

The fact that it seems all chevy diesel problems are caused by someone putting gasoline in their tanks.

Now I wouldn't go so far as to say that! My brother bought a new 4x4 crew cab short bed leather interior Duramax Allison 3/4 ton. I would not hesitate to swap my Dodge for it and maybe even pay some difference!:D

My new "Plus One" Rule......

Gentlemen, I have been as quick to point out what I perceive as certain negative aspects of the DuraMax design as anyone here. You know, ... the typical GM can't build diesels, aluminum heads will explode, head gaskets will disappear normal type (TDR) stuff. Well. Time for me to have a personal reality check. The story... ...

I was camping out last weekend here in Tennessee and went for a walk around the campground. There was a new Duramax parked a couple of spaces down from my Dodge and the DMax's owner was sitting out under his awning relaxing. Well, I stopped to ask him how he liked his diesel pickup and long story short, we ended up talking about our trucks and anything and everything for close to an hour. :) He is a hard working employee at the Saturn Auto plant and was absolutely one of the nicest most pleasant people I have ever met. I might also add that his wife and two sons were there camping with him too. Simply put Mr. "Dmax" and his family are what America is all about.

Gentlemen, one of the last things I would ever want to wish upon this man would be problems with his family's truck or more specifically his truck's engine. I am still not a GM fan, but the quality time I spent with him in conversation interjected a human element into this whole engine vs. engine debate that in my mind had been totally missing. SO... ... ...

I'm going to do my level best from here on out not to trash talk another man's purchase decision. That will be hard on me because Cummins diesel engines are my life. My "Plus One" rule is simple. I still want to own the best truck, (and engine) but instead of smugly anticipating someone else having engine problems, I hope instead that their truck will run trouble free for 400,000 miles. My "Plus One" rule will give me exactly 400,001. :)

Bravo!

I tend to agree. The Duramax has a good record for a new engine/transmission release. I for one am suprised. And I wish no ill will towards any GM owner. But,I am not going to run out and buy any V-8 diesel. Just ain't right!

Don't tell anyone, but I have freinds who even drive Powerstrokes!

The FACT that many "nice folks" buy Duramaxes is hardly an issue! Folks aren't "nice" simply because they drive Dodges - or "bad" if they drive something else. We aren't particularly defined by what we DRIVE, but rather by how we conduct ourselves as individual beings.

The basic consideration among rational and mature thinking individuals here HAS been concerning DESIGN ISSUES related to the DM diesels as opposed to Cummins in particular - and the relative durability differences and operating characteristics in comparison between the "big three" domestic auto makers. The establishment of boards such as this one is exactly to expose, examine and discuss those differences to better select the best vehicle for OUR particular use - and the WORSE that can happen is for board moderators, members or users to deliberately attempt to censor, control or manipulate the flow of info that is offered to provide that flow.

NONE of those issues CHANGE just because the buyer is a "nice guy"! NOR will any of us in ANY way benefit if GM experiences another diesel failure - such a failure would only remove another choice from our menu.

Sure, we DON'T wish bad luck upon ANY buyer - we ALL pay way too much for this stuff to see it wasted on a bad product. We may all indulge in varying degrees of humor in poking fun at other brands, as *I* do in my sig line - and defending our OWN buying choice, and may also attempt to offer what WE consider helpful info to prospective buyers. But *I* don't see many here HOPING for another GM diesel failure - after all, I was never a Chrysler supporter until my own current Dodge - I just bought a Cummins wrapped in Dodge sheetmetal. and never have regretted it!

This isn't about emotion or "warm and fuzzy feelings" - it IS about getting the MOST value for your vehicle dollar, and as the occasion arises, helping others do the same.

If I were buying another vehicle today, I would be hard pressed to decide between a Dodge and a Ford - I would NOT buy a GM at this point simply because there is no established track record to date, and too much money is at stake to gamble on so many new and unproven design issues - that may well all prove out in time, and I hope it does. But it has NOTHING to do with "nice people", or "bad people" - it DOES have to do with design, engineering and company support. No more - no less!

Time will tell... ;)

I'd never wish engine failure or new vehicle problems on anyone, if y'all took my post that way, I apologize, what I said was only in fun. I have my own personal reasons for disliking theDuraMax, but certainly never have held ownership of any brands of vehicles against anyone. My best friend has a Toyota, another has a Powerstroke, one has a Chevy z-71... .

Here in Oregon, you almost always have to let

somebody else fuel your diesel (or any other

vehicle). So far I've always been able to

pull up real close to the diesel pump.

No one has enjoyed predicting the early demise of the DuraMaxes more than I have. No one. I'm just simply not going to go there any more. My post was a stand alone post that I just threw into this thread. I probably should have posted it as a stand alone topic. I apologize to anyone that was offended by my newfound civility. I was not responding to or following up on any of the previous postings. It was meant as a harmless declaration of fact. Thank You Gentlemen. This is a great web site. :)

I don't wish them bad luck either. They are a little intolerant of questions about things that others have about possible problems

For instance

Edited: URL removed. I can't access the Cheby page.

The attitude of it hasn't happened until someone from the factory can verify it on the computer is BS.

Their factory man says that engines have been replaced. When asked how many, he skirts the question. When asked what went wrong, he blows it off. Someone that challenges that on their site is eaten alive.

It would be like someone here questioning a lift pump and some DC guy saying it's all rumor because he hasn't seen the report. Give me a break. I wish them well.

Just one note... . one of the honest guys on that site in the link above mentioned the dmax being put on the dyno but they couldn't get accurate numbers because the transmission kept shifting. Do I think it's funny. No. That's what these sites are for... . to pass information. That is an interesting observation he made and you'll notice, there was no response.

Alan,

The link is no longer there. I think they deleted it. I did see the

post about a dealer replacing a Dmax due to a push rod failure and they had the VIN number and the work order number from the dealer to provide proof it was done.

See what I mean? The issue was, one of their own said they had a problem with injector nuts backing off under the valve covers. The guy that wrote the post said his dealer told him of two occasions that had been found at the one dealer. No body had a record at the factory, therefore the guy that made the post was a liar. Then the pack ate him.

Of course, I can't prove this. It's no longer there and no one has seen it.
