Does Mercedes Benz still make a Diesel?

Dodge Heavy Duty Ad

My boss has a 01 Duramax with 78000mi. Last week he said that he had an oil leak. So he took it to the dealer and come to find out he had lost an injector. They told him that they just work loose after time and that they would probably do it again. I was just wondering for my own satisfaction is this true? Is this something you have to worry about with the Cummins? I thought this was a bunch of crap.

Thanks,

Eric

This is a first. I have never heard of an injector working loose. I have heard of the wires working loose. I have heard of the injectors going bad do to bad filtration.

I have a friend with an 01' Duramax, 2 of his injectors failed. He has some kind of a 100 HP box, and only has about 15,000 on the motor. He goes overboard on maintenance, oil filters etc... I have heard the injectors going bad is common on the Duramax.

Maybe his truck saw my new 03' Cummins and was envious and wanted to be a 6 cylinder !

His truck is totally stock. I told him that I didn't think that sounded right, but he said thats what they said was wrong with it. He's one of those people if they said it, then its gospel.

Well I think the dealership was blowing smoke but there is (was) definitely a major issue with the Duracrap injection system. I had an '01 as well. Right before the truck turned 70k I noticed that it was exceedingly sluggish and running bad one day while driving home. Once I got there I looked and the whole undercarriage and drivetrain was coated in diesel and oil. Went straight to the closest Chevy dealer and they took it in (they weren't happy about the pool of diesel I left either). After much trial and error (and 3 weeks of driving a pos rental car) the truck had 8 new injectors, 8 new fuel lines to the injectors, and a new HP fuel pump. One of the lines, which were supposed to be stainless steel, had actually RUSTED OFF where it hooked to the injector and was spewing diesel under the head. The dealer said they had no way to tell how long this had been going on. The truck still felt very slow, even after I reinstalled my Edge Juice. Plus, I was extremely concerned about the fuel line because if it had been like that for a while then theoretically the diesel fuel could have washed all the oil off the valves and everything underneath there causing premature wear. Personally, with the lack of customer care and support from GM, as well as a shoddy engine design in my opinion, I'm not going to buy another GM product for a very long time, if ever. My Cummins stock drives like my Dmax with the Juice on Level 2. Just my $0. 02 worth.

I was talking to a friend today who is in the Bosch Diesel fuel injection service buisness. He stated that the Bosch Injector for the DURAWAX is $550. oo each, list price. If you had to change a set of 8 X 550 = $ 4,400. 00. Lots of BUCKS. Happy that I have a Cummins.

They run nice stock (Duramax's) but I sure would not want one out of warranty; engine parts $$$$, doesn't look that fun to work on, lack of places to get parts as compared to Cummins engines, etc. etc..... I've owned enough General Mistakes vehicles to know that you get rid of them before the warranty is up!

p. s. It is nice reading about the number of Million Mile Rams that are powered by Cummins... . at least the injectors won't crap out before the warrenty is up on my ISB, nor after the warranty is up as well. :)

Hey Reb,see you got a CTD. Weren't you debating a little while back between a PSD or a Cummins? What made the desicion for you?... Doug

Hey Doug,

Yep I've been debating the CTD and PSD in my mind for some tuime now. Even before I bought my Dmax I was still trying to decide. I always liked Dodge trucks ever since the body style change in '94. I learnd how to drive a stick on a 72ish 350. I knew the Cummins was a hack of a powerhouse as well. The PSD is also a very good engine, especially in the 94-97 form. The new PSD trucks seem to have a lot of issues with them but still they are good. I bought my Dmax because I got a oggod deal on it. When it came to buying another diesel, the choice was Ford or Dodge. I knew that a Cummins, if well maintained, would pretty much last forever. My decision ultimately came down to cost. The Cummins will get better fuel mileage and make more power dollar for dollar. I needed a truck that would have a low cost both on the front end investment and in long term maintainence. I figured the Cummins would save me money in fuel consumption and repairs. Also, I felt this truck would be easier to work on. All in all I just felt more comfotrable buying a Cummins with 140k over a PSD with 140k.

Does that make sense?

Understood Reb,I work on 7. 3 PSD's at work(power co. )and even though I prefer in-line sixes, the 7. 3's do a good job, just a bit harder to work on. Don't know much about the D-maxes or the 6. 0's,but it sounded like you didn't have a good experience with your Max. I hope that the Bosch C/R fuel system problems don't carry over to the new CTD,cause I plan on getting one in a couple of years. I guess we'll see. The new 6. 0 PS seem to have their share of problems too, hope they get them figured out cause I figure I'll be seeing them at work in the near future. Have fun with your rig,and if you need ay tips on Bombing it don't be afraid to ask... Doug

thanks Doug. Shoot, I've only been on here a few weeks now and I al ready have to omuch "advice" on BOMBs. Geez! Ya'll are going to put me in the poor house.

From what I've been hearing, the fuel system issues with the Dmax have been ironed out finally. My truck was an early '01 model so I may have gotten to be the guinea pig. I talked to a guy at a Ford dealer up here and he said that Ford almost has everything worked out with the new 6. 0. I'm going to wait till a year from now before I make a decision though. Hopefully by the time my truck wears out all of them will have their stuff straight and I can make a fair comparison for all 3. Doubt that will happen, but it sounds good. The thing that really did me in with GM was their attitude towards my situation. When the truck went down I was supposed to move 2 days later. I put the move off a week and it still wasn't fixed and GM's position was tough s**t. Thats what really gave me a serious case of the red bootie.

BTW, the '04 Dmax trucks are supposed to have a power upgrade in addition to a different turbo with a variable outlet so that it will spool quicker like the 6. 0 Ford.

A friend that I tow with sometimes just got an 04 Dmax Dually w/allison. Last week we both hooked up to 35' 5ers to take from Ne. to Harrisburg, Pa. I had to back off on the hills to keep from running over him. I know mines broke in w/82K+, and he has 9K on his, and mine dyno'd 310hp, but I thought his should have done better. I know mine is heavier, cause when we got off the Pa. turnpike, it cost him $9. 05, and I pd. $11. 05. I avgd. 12. 4mpg, he wouldn't tell me what he made. I was surprised the Dmax has 215x85x16 D rated tires, they sure looked small on that big dually. Thought he might not have the towing pkg. , but he did. He has an 01 PSD for sale, the auto transmission has went out twice on him in 91K mi. I wanted to tell him he sure was a glutton for punishment, but, I'm 5'6", and he is 6'4", and a retired Marine 1st. Sgt. !! I ani't too smart, but I'm not stupid!:)

If he had a transmission temp gauge (assuming he didn't), he might not have had that much trouble with the transmission.

Last year at Superman (Remote control jets rally) I was able to ride in a Durpad - the guy put the go pedal down and WOW - it took off like crazy - of couse it was auto compared to my manual - it was still a WOW - great pickup. He hasn't had any trouble with it and I don't wish it upon him one bit. As I see it, we all should be cheering for any diesel (cummin being the best!!) so we can get this county converted over to a better power plant - although that woudl result in the prices of diesel going throug the roof - Oh well - I'll still dirve my truck!
