Here's an email I received from Mike Smith on Mon, 15 Sep 2003 13:32:52 -0400.

He sends me this but talks smack about my truck to his Dodge buddies.

I had the red /black dodge you were in the pull off with, your dmax runs very impressive,I also have a 02 dmax, bone stock right now,I plan on selling the dodge and pulling the chevy next year,it look likes theres more potential in the chevy plus its drives like a car insted of a log wagon like the dodge does. Are you hitting any other pulls this year?Mike Smith, bowling green,OH

I drove to the pull 150 miles from Grand Rapids, MI and drove 150 miles back home. I parked next to a tractor puller friend of mine that was there. He has a trailer, but he had 2 tractors inside. I would have had to park on the roof to be "trailered in"

Ask the guy how he figures my truck was trailered to Wauseon?

Let him know that Wauseon was my 2nd ever hook and my truck just had a 125 juice box, airbox/airfilter mods and a flowmaster muffler on the stock exhaust.

Ask him why he didn't mention that he placed behind me in the 8000# class.

Ask him how he likes his Duramax.

my second hook too,I didn't weigh my truck up for the next class,It looked to me like your truck was a on a drop deck trailer. We have a duramax on the farm, its a nice truck, just a little pricey to hook. I have 15,000 in my 98 12v with add-ons. Our duramax was over 40,000. What would you pull?

See you at wauseon mike,Make sure you leave the NOS at home.

Micheal Tomac has proven the Duramax a contender ... He always DRIVES to his events he participates in, most of the time hauling a trailer with him ...

If IIRC he has a lot of skills in pulling and for the making of a proper hook up with his Chevy truck ... . He has taken his Duramax to the track and blasted out some excellent times good enough to place second at the TS Performance All Diesel Challenge event ... Dollar for dollar compared to what his competition was, there's no real comparision to what it TOOK to beat him ...

Last I remember he is well into 70K on the clock of hard driven along with many rips down the track ... . He certainly is dispelling rules GM can't compete ...

So look out for the Red CC , it'll be Locked and ready to Rocket in this years events ...

I think he meant no Duramax is close to 799 without drugs, unless that is what you meant also, Quadzilla. Correct me if I am wrong!

In '03 Ford gave the option for the 7. 3L or the 6. 0L. I have seen three or four 7. 3L 2003 Ford trucks.

Merrick

Close Merrick. What they did was offer the 7. 3 in 2003 until the 2003. 25 models came out. Then they were all 6. 0 from there on. Kinda like the 98 12/24 valves for Dodge, only this was the 7. 3 until 2003. 35 and 6. 0 from 2003. 25 and on. They are all the same badging though, no matter the PSD model.

The '03 Fords I saw Had the "Old Black, POWERSTROKE" badge on it, while the other '03's they had with the 6. 0's were the "Chrome POWERSTROKE" Badges.

I was told they were given the option, but I think you are correct Nick.

I guess it all depends what close is??

I was originally thinking he meant at all.

I am not so bold as to think I can make 800 ponies on #2 yet. It is coming though.

I dont know Merrick! I was assuming all the 03s had the lights on the mirrors but maybe they offered the last 7. 3s badged as the 02 style. Who knows! Now I am curious though.

Qzilla, not sure what to tell ya! But I know any diesel pickup engine running 800 horses is simply amazing, Duramax or Cummins. I won't say the 6. 0 cause those have trouble running staying stock.

The '03's I saw did Have the lights and such,, but teh badges were old 7. 3L style.

Thats a crock. Tomac doesn't trailer his truck. He usually is pulling a trailer coming in to the event, unhooks, beats a Dodge and leaves.

I must of been hallucinating, there were allot of diesel fumes in the air that day,my apologies to everyone. I'll get my eyes checked this week.

The 6. 0 was having issues so they pushed production back until late november I believe. That leaves enough room for a hundred thousand 03 7. 3s.

I think the biggest problem they were having was mating it to the 6speed. The lack of low end torque can be fatal and they knew it.

You're right Merrick.

I asked the Diesel Stop guys since I was so curious. Yes, the 2003 7. 3s had the 02 badges and I think the mirrors were an option.

2003 7.3

my friend bought his truck in feb of 2003 and still got a 7. 3, he didn't want a 6. 0. In nov of 2003 the piant started to fall off of his truck, his truck is a f-250 4x4 sport package all black and the truck had 5,000 miles on it, so he went to the ford dealer where he bought the truck and they did the tape test on the drivers door, they stick a piece of duct tape a foot long on the drivers door and peel it off to see how much paint is loose, it pulled 11" of paint off of the door, boy he was PI$$ED!!! When it got done at the body shop, the bill was $6,000. But it sure looks nice now, 10 times better than factory, no orange peel at all. Oo.

Dont tell the ford boys. One of their arsenal of putdowns is dodges paint peels. I think the clever painter term is delaminate.

I personally have only had one ford that didnt have peeling paint. I didnt give it enough chance but Im sure it wouldve came through for me.

NPloysa has it right !

My friends '03 7. 3 looks identical to any '02. Same badges and same mirrors with no lights. The salesman did say that he could find him an '03 7. 3 with the lighted mirrors, they just didn't have one on the lot.

I talked him out of the 6. 0, which he has thanked me for a couple times since. They may be getting a lot better ( I am starting to see a lot more on the road ), but an early build 6. 0 was bad news IMHO.

Jeff

The FORD boys only buy for the 7. 3. The rest just comes with it.

Now that the 6. 0 is out... what's a good reason?

I know what you mean Hoot, but that's what the Ford guys say about us Dodge guys, that we only bought the truck for the engine.
