I've been running an Amsoil Nano with a CBT and PSM intake for about 7-8K now. (I started using this filter mid-oil change cycle) After I put in the Garrett Turbo, the CBT was touching the oil filter so yesterday I took the CBT and trimmed a little off the turbo end. Fits better now, even though it's a little ragged on the end. Anyway, I noticed that inside the CBT there was some type of grayish residue. I could only see it in the right light in the tube and it was very minimal, but a definite rim of the stuff could be seen where the turbo lip/edge meets in the tube. I can't believe it is dust. I remember a post awhile back about some white residue of similar nature from the Nano, but I can't find the post. I was going to do a UOA at the next oil change, but now I'm a little afraid of dusting my engine. I run the same filter in my wife"s Jeep CRD and at the last oil change with 7K on the oil, silicone was upper limit of normal. I have taken great care to make sure the edges of the filter are sealed at the filter housing. What gives???

What do you mean "those type filters"? The nano and K&N are very different. I long ago dismissed K&N as a real air filter.

I posted a while back about mine. When I was blowing it clean with

"low pressure air", I had dust coming from inside the filter. I also had a slight amount of dust in my tube to the turbo.

I cleaned mine with a h2o/simple green solution and will be checking it shortly. I tried to find out about a replacement in kind AFE pro-dry but never get a response.

I use the AFE Force 7 Ply filter. I have never had any dust of any kind in the CBT. And my silicon readings at oil sample time, are below average.

I've been running a nano for about 20K miles now.

I had one oil analysis 13K after inst. the nano and all was normal, I just sent in another one with another 6700 miles recently, and I will post the results when I get them.

So far I haven't found any dust inside my intake tube. I'll check that and add that to my post. Dust scares me!

Ray

PS. 99% of my driving is asphalt, low dust conditions, and I blow it out every 5-6K miles.

I think the Pre-Filter on my AFE really helps to keep the dirt out. I have gone thru 3 of them in 5 years. The heat ruins the eslastic.

I ran the Amsoil nano for a while and found it to stop up quickly and hard to clean with compressed air. Also it let dust get through something the Pro Guard 7 doesn't do. The afe filters can be cleaned a few times and wearing a prefilter helps them stay cleaner longer. After the Amsoil gets stopped up that's it.

Dusting diesels Batman !!

I ran gravel crusher (massive dust) for several years and have worked in truck / equipment maint. for years. On one crusher set up I worked on we had the original Deutz oil bath filters with cyclone type precleaners and that was a disaster. You could carve your name inside the after filter tubing in a very short time. We went to Donaldson cyclone type filter assemblies with inner safety elements (were talking BIG filters here) and I could still wipe SOME dust off the inside intake tubes. I can say I have NEVER encountered an intake tube that I could wipe down with a clean rag and not get something. Some are better than others of course and one biggie I have learned is that YOUR attention to assembly is very important. Some that rely on ears and tabs as part of the cover or hold downs can be a real problem and the connections on plumbing of the suction side can throw some dirt in the works also. Pay VERY CLOSE attention and be very carefull when you work on any of the intake stuff !

More info:

My original post was right before we left town for a week or so. B/O concern, I put in a paper filter and changed the oil (UOA pending) before our 1K trip. When I got back I looked things over real well. My thought is that if dust is getting thru, it would be at the seal. I saw a few places that looked suspicious that dust might be getter thru. The amsoil seal is a full millimeter thinner than the Puralator paper filter I dropped in before we left. I also looked very closed at the nano on the wife's Liberty. There was a small, but definite, area of dust on the turbo side of the filter. Even thought the last UOA of that engine was OK, I going back to paper. I also looked more closely at the dust in the CBT. I'm not sure there is dust in the inner surface because it won't wipe off. However, the layer I saw at the turbo lip did wipe off, so something was there. I think I'll try the AFE Pro Guard drop-in next.

Tinman, it was me

I posted on the little crinkly fiber looking stuff I notice in the tube with the Nano after 3k miles. I removed it, boxed it and shelved it. I recently reinstalled it and have checked it several times and now have run it about 10k miles with 2 cleanings. No dust, fibers, whatever at all in the tube. Just exactly what I expected. Anything coming off the filter material came off the first time I started the truck when the filter was new. I think if I would have blown off the new filter before installing it there would have been nothing ever seen. I sure got ragged by amsoil dealer members that it was impossible so I'm glad to hear others have noticed something also. I will give credit to Amsoil however, they called me after I emailed them with my concern, they also ask me to send the filter in for inspection. I think I will just to know how well it is filtering, inspection has found almost nothing on the filter. My concern is it may not be doing it's job, that's my main concern now. If I find out anything I'll post it. I have a cold air intake and back country alot in the summer and the winters are wet in Wy. so I change filters about 7. 5k because of the summer dust and winter road grim that accumulates on the filter, much more than before the cold air intake. So I guess it's paper for awhile... ... john

Yep, that was the post. I'm sure the element is adequate, but I'm sceptical of the seal. I think the OEM box and lid is a poor design, which requires a very good fit from the filter. I've not given up on this filter, but I do have concerns.

i live on a dusty gravel road and i don't care what the ad department of any air filter tells you ...

the white glove treatment is still the best ...

i've had afe's in both of mine and NEVER had any dust whatsoever in the intake

PG7 "muscle builder fit"

I'm using the PG7 drop-in with factory box on mine. I'd hope it does seal adequately as it take a lot of effort to close the cover. Is anybody else experiencing this?

i have been running the Nano for over 6000 miles with great UOA. . very low silcone. i just sent of another UOA when that gets back i will post my results.

I just got back from vacation, where I drove about 100 mi. with the nano filter in a stock box. When I read this post, I went out and "white gloved" the intake tube... not a speck of dust. (whew!):)

for thousewho do UOA< what number are you seeing for silcone? i should be getting my next UOA here anyday now from blackstone. i have an average or 7 PPM... . that high?

I've done two samples, the first was 4 ppm silicon, the second was 2 ppm. To the right of the oil sample analysis page it lists universal averages for silicon as 7 ppm, so I would say that you have nothing to worry about.
