Leaking Axle Seal - Long Post

Power Steering cooler or not?

The rear brakes on my 2001 3500 started to
squeal when I stopped so the other day I took
the wheels off and checked em out. Thankfully
the drums come off without having to take the
axles out (GM 1 ton rears suck). Here are
some pics that I took while everything was
exposed. Might come in handy for some of you
that do a rear brake job and cannot figure
out the way things go back together agian. #ad

The mileage as of these pics is about 21,000.

Turns out they were only glazed from getting
them wet launching the jetskis at the lake.
Still plenty of material left; I just lightly
sanded them.

chris , never paid much attention last time i pulled my drums but the dodge setup looks very much like the brakes i did on an 89 ford E350 cube van for a guy i work with , his had the ford rear and not the dana , which was a godsend for pulling the hubs off . after i pulledd the hubs to replace drums i found out the drums come off the same as our dodges ...

side note , REAL trucks need REAL floor jacks , i couldn't help but notice yours , have you tried to lift the front with that ??? one thing i never skimp on is the correct tools for the job at hand ...

Yeah, that floor jack is not up to the task
of lifting all that Cummins cast iron! I am
going to get a Lincoln floor jack (WalMart
has them!) soon. I don't know if you are
familiar with the Lincoln brand, but most
of the larger service shops use them around here. The jack in the picture
looks wimpy but it rally is pretty well built
and has lifted the front of my previous truck
with a V8 diesel in it no problem. . I do use
stout floor jacks to support the truck when I
am underneath it though! #ad

Good high quality jack stands are a must, once the truck is up ... safety first, always #ad

Thanks for the pics. I have been wondering exactly what my brake set up was on my dodge. Now I have a pretty good idea. I'm sure glad that the drums just slide off. I will be checking mine in about 3 weeks when I get new tires "again" #ad

Chris...

I'm with Pres10!! Please put jack stands under your axles before crawling under your truck!!! Many years ago (I won't say how many) I personally saw two heavy duty floor jacks collapse under their load. They were more than enough for the job, they just let go of their seal and dropped their load. This is bad enough with just the wheels off, but loosing you under that truck is not an option!! Please, please protect yourself. If not for you, think of those you'll leave behind. Sorry, this just scares the *ell out of me considering what I've seen happen before.

Thinking of your safety,

David

Good pictures! Looked like mine, not a critisim, but there is a lot of rust. Don't know if I did right or not, but there are several products that chemically bond with the rust to eliminate it. First time I check my rear took a wire brush cleaned everything as well as I could then sprayed all the rusted areas. Over 32K now looks good with practicley no rust anywhere. Hubs come right off no banging no hassels. Just thought I'd throw my . 02$ in for all its worth.
