Huh, so it wasn't the cigarette lighter connection? I guess it must have been a faulty transformer. I'd agree that the inverter is going to be more useful. I'll be switching to one soon, if only to tidy things up and go to a plug that won't pop out at every bump.

A friend has promised to pick up an inverter at Sam's for $25. Radio Shack wanted $99. Do you think they are the same? Why would one cost four times as much? I believe they are both the same wattage.

Just picked up the DeLorme Earthmate and have found only one problem. The voice in the software is too low, I can hardly hear it with the volume turned all the way up. Is there a way to input the voice from the laptop into my truck radio? I have an aftermarket radio with an auxillary input and am wondering if this may work. Anyone else have this problem?

The first thing to do is double-click the volume icon on your task bar. Make sure both the "master volume" and "wave" sliders are all the way up.

You can also look on the "options" menu and be sure "advanced controls" has a check mark beside it. Then look at the master volume and wave boxes on the main screen. Did any buttons or check boxes show up that say something about boost? If so, turn them on.

Those steps will get you the max volume from your laptop speakers.

You should be able to use the aux input, but lower the volume on your laptop so you don't blow the pre-amp.

If your laptop has a line output jack, that would be the better choice.

ToolMan,

I like that idea. I picked up a patch cord from Radio Shack but seem to have a lot of engine noise when turned up where I can here it. Must be all the years of the sirens blarring on the fire trucks has dimminished my hearing too much.
