AirDog 150 Install, What to do with the Factory Return Line?

Smarty Revo settings

Do either the Juice or EZ raise boost pressure or does boost remain at factory level?

The boost level is higher because the additonal fuel creates more drive pressure to the turbine wheel. The chip does boost fooling, witch is telling the ecm that the boost is lower than it realy is, so it does not set a check engine light for high boost level. I also went from 30psi to 40psi on stock turbo with only the juice.

Around what boost pressure does the ECM kick out a check engine light?

What kind of RWHP and RWTQ is the Juice capable of with and without the hot unlock on a 04. 5 that's still running the stock injectors and stock turbo? Granted these numbers vary from truck to truck and dyno to dyno, but I'm just curious what typically can be expected given a mostly stock truck such as mine currently is (see sig line).

I had the Edge EZ and it worked fine, but I wanted more power and guages so I went to the Edge juice and Attitude. Great power, some extra smoke, but overall a good set up. I saw 41 pounds of boost set on level 5. I never had the hot unlock installed. I managed to damage my transmission and torque converter driving agressively on level 5 and now regret not having given the transmission some beef before adding all the engine power. I loved having the integral guages and adjustability with the attitude. Occasionally my pyro would run erratically on the attitude and cleaning the tip of the thermocouple did not always end this problem. I gained 1-2mpg when set on levels 1, 2, or 3. Beyond that my mileage usually went down because of the increased fueling. I have the SMARTY now and am awaiting the trip to Brown's Diesel for my transmission overhaul before I will be able to objectively evaluate the SMARTY vs. the Edge. Both companies gave me great customer support.

Thanks for the reply, Paddy.

I have researched Smarty and it looks like a great product. What attracts me to the Edge Attitude w/Juice is the on-the-fly adjustability. I don't want to have to pull over and stop to download a new program.

Smarty seems to have the ability to add more power than the Juice initially, but doing the hot unlock (plus perhaps stacking EZ) with the Juice seems to put the two products closer (around 200 additional HP for both).

I do not know the psi that kicks the light, but have read about high boost codes from programers. I dynoed my truck last year. The only modes I had were (HOT) juice, AFE intake, 5in. exguast, and an ATS intake manifold. Best run was 452. 4hp.

That's actually more power than I thought given such few mods. What was RWTQ? I'm assuming you had the Juice set on level 6 (hot unlock)?

Edge Attitude/Juice

I have one of the early versions, I need to send it in for an up grade, I hate to take it off. I love it, I keep mine set a 3 for all the power I need, I leave it a 3 pulling my 15k fw, it has great power on hills, watch the manifold temp and back off when it gets over 1325... On hard pulls at 35psi boost the temp will keep climbing. I have the manual stock tran and clutch, I do worry about slipping the clutch. I have had my Edge for 40k. My only problem is loss of power below 2000 rpms and with 3. 73 that puts me below the power band at 60 mph.

Edge is good buy and seems trouble free. ;)

I do not know torque because it was on Maddogs mobile dyno at a show last year. The dyno only gave horsepower. I juice was on the hot (180hp) level. I am going the the same show (norcal ralley in Redding California) in three weeks and I will see if I can get 550hp+ this time. The addition 100hp will come from the EZ, HTT turbo, and water/meth.

The only thing I dont like about mine is that there are only 3 settings for back ground light. I wish there was another one between 'low' and 'off'. But that's a small price to pay for all the benifits. I have found that I get better fuel milage with it set on level 3 (drive setting) and the low boost fuel set to the lowest setting. I get a little better milage that way than with it set on level 1 (milage setting) and the low boost fuel set on low. Strange, but it works.

Which HTT turbo? Any issues with the EZ stack? A turbo upgrade and EZ stack are future upgrades for my truck.

I have the htb2 turbo, 62mm compressor, 65mm turbine, 13cm stainless steel housing. The turbo spools up faster than the stock turbo. I should of went bigger but I did not want to loose any driveability. I am very happy with the turbo but may go larger or twins. I have no problems with the EZ. I am planning on injectors and fuel pump next year and will probably take the EZ off. The juice w/attitude adds way way more power than the EZ.

If the a set of injectors is the better way to go versus stacking the EZ, then I will go that route instead. Thing is, I just don't know where to go from stock. Same goes for the turbo. I drive the truck ever day and tow on the weekends, so I don't want to lose TOO much driveability, but I also want the truck to pull well on the top end. If I could find a turbo that doesn't spool too much slower than the stock turbo but added a bunch more power in the middle and top, I'd be happy.

I just want to make sure the turbo and injectors I end up getting compliment the Juice.

I think the injectors are safer than the EZ because of the higher rail pressure. I have read were hight pressure causes wear and damage to the injector body. The think the EZ is fairly mild and should be safe. Injectors do the same thing as higher pressure, it puts more fuel in the same amount of time (time would be duration). The juice incresed the duration on the injectors. The injector nozzles are about $900 and more labor intensive, but probably worth it in the long run. As far as the turbo goes transmission, gearing, tire size, alltitude and other things of that nature play part in turbo drivability. Because I have 35in. tires my truck runs about 1600 rpm at 65, so there is less drive pressure and volume of air at lower rpm. Dave at HTT said if I went to a 71mm turbine wheel that I would run 0 to 1psi at 65mph and have high egt on cruising but lower max egt. The turbo I have runs about 4 to 5psi cruising (same as stock). The only way I could realy tell if the larger turbo would have good driveability would be to spend $1800 and try it. I am not that rich.

I have about 40K on my juice w/attitude. With a stock auto transmission I pretty much leave it set to number 3. The 60 hp can be felt and I don't worry about tearing up the transmission. I like the gauges and the built in safety options that allow me to set defueling levels based on tranmission slip and maximum boost. Later this month I plan on driveing out to New Hampshire and Maine. I plan on driving out set on level 1 which is economy and driving home set on level 3. I hope that the economy setting will keep me above 20 mpg.

I ordered the Attitude w/juice as well as the A-pillar mount for the Attitude today. Let the fun begin!

Quick question. How do I go about getting the hot unlock code? Do I call Edge Products?

I believe you need to contact edge for some release papers and send the unit back to them for a programing change. There is a charge for this. Remember that your stock unit can add 100 hp to factory. I would be awful careful on adding more then the 60 hp that is available on level 3 of the stock unit. The 48 RE is a pretty robust transmission but can and will be trashed by gobs of HP over stock. You might want to try the reqular Edge for a while and wait until you have an extra 4 grand in the piggy bank to replace your transmission before you go to the hot edge. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, I just checked Edge's website. Looks like I have to print out the release form on their site and send my Juice in to be reflashed. From what I have read on this site, level 5 would be the new "hot" setting. My fuel system and turbo ( as well as the trans and converter) are currently stock, so I'm wondering if I should even bother right now. Then again, since I don't have the Juice installed yet, maybe I should send it in to have the reflashing done before I install it?

Does anyone know the typical turn around time for sending the Juice in and getting it back?

The newer ones have the level 6 (HOT) already programed into it. Fill out from and fax it to Edge with $100 for the code to unlock it. My older one from 2005 hade to be sent in and only has 5 levels, no 40hp level.

That's great news, WoodJ! Thanks for the info!

I wonder why Edge Products hasn't updated this info on their online Hot unlock form?
