Are my EGT's right for a stock 04.5??

the aerodynamics of the ram truck increase by over 34% at 71. 4 mph. I can get the actual wind tunnel reports for you guys. give me a day or two.

I really Like the EZ

My wife's 03 dynoed 349 RWHP w/ the Edge EZ, AFE Mega Cannon and Aeroturbine muffler. The reshaped power curve is IMHO more of a benefit than the pure power/tq gains on the top.

I leave all power upgrades on when visiting the dealer. We all know DC's official position on mods to our vehicles, but I think being honest is most important. I want my 5-Star to be honest w/ me and I'm honest with them. We have a great relationship and if at some point I have to pay, I understand all the terms and limits of my warranty.

So life is good and so is BOMBing.

Why would I have to set it to zero for heavy towing? That is just when I would need the extra horsepower and torque. Please either you or someone else who has knowledge help me understand. Why waste the money if you have to turn it off during heavy towing? Thanks.

The EZ on it's highest setting really shines when the truck is pulling heavy (especially around town, on-ramps, etc. ), but you can't just pretend you have 11 liters under the hood and leave it OD through the mountains with your foot on the floor (like lots of folks seem to want to do based on their comments). I prefer to leave the EZ set high and use my brain/foot combo to keep the truck in one piece.

I didn't see any significant milage additions on my truck when I stacked the EZ... 35's and TST/EZ nets me 20 MPG on the computer and 15 Hand calculated.

Edge EZ!

Great thread. Just have to join in. I really like my Edge EZ. I plugged it in and left it at default setting. Now that I have EGT gauge I would like to try the top setting (4?) Only trouble is I lost the data sheet that came with the unit. Seem to remember another thread where someone posted the jumper positions for the various settings. I'll do a search on that topic.

Can some one tell us about the Juice? is that an upgrade to the EZ?

Thanks!

That's been my position as well, wiredawg. That's why I left the EZ on when rear my u-joint went out. If I take the EZ off, I'll probably leave it off. But I won't like driving the truck nearly as much!

I've got 50k towing miles with mine on 4, I've tried 5 and 6 but prefer 4. Previous trailers were 8500 lb enclosed race trailers (added aerodynamic drag). I've got a 38' 5er race trailer now and have towed it about 3500 miles. I was concerned the EZ would not be enough but it did surpisingly well. I've got an AFE drop in and stock exhaust, EGT is manageable, though I can peg it if I rev in lower gears. I look forward to the Juice but the EZ is a great bang for the buck. I tow interstate and mountains, about 7 over the limit (82 mph tops)

i thought there were only 4 settings on the EZ were is 5 nd 6 at?

I think he's talking about an earlier EZ. Mine supposedly has five settings with a "secret" sixth setting that power shops like ATS know about.

I thought the EZ for the 03 (like mine) had 4 settings with a 5th "secret" setting that almost everyone tried. It is not supported by EZ and they will not give out the pin settings or what it will do. Never heard of a 6th setting on the 03 box was I think the earlier boxes had it.

TDovi... I think what is generally implied by Heavy towing is when you've got 15,000 or more of trailer you can easily push the EGT's to over 1500 degrees if you keep your foot in it... especially on a long mountain pass... Diesel's will continue to generate more power the more fuel you run through them until they melt down. That's why it is highly recommended to at least get an EGT guage installed at a minimum. That's the only way you can accuratly monitor what's going on. It should be the first mod everyone does... and hopefully it will be a factory instrument before 2010 on these types of rigs... 2005 we see a factory brake controller on the 05 Fords... hopefully soon we'll see a factory EGT?

I read on here some guy from West Texas hauling oil field supplies up to Wyoming was getting some 1400+ degree EGT's pulling 27,000 lbs. combined weight at 71 mph with a stock H. O. 2003 Cummins 305/555. The CR Cummins seem to run higher EGTs out of the box compared to the 1st/2nd Gen Rigs.

If you put a box on at least install a $120 EGT Gauge... the Ram SRT mount is the perfect mount for a single gauge and it will be a highly used instrument.

I have the secret 5th setting diagram so if anyone is looking for it send me a PM. I've got it taped to the top of my EZ since I'm always changing the settings based on the weather or where I'm going. Looking forward to the the 03 305/555 Juice w/ Attitude2 combo so I can adjust on the fly... but very happy with the EZ.

Thanks for you detailed response. I have tried to contact EZ for their comments. No response to my e-mail to them and I haven't been able to contact them by phone yet. Number is always busy. My 5th wheel is approx. 13. 2K and I really haven't had a problem, even on tough hills (mountains). Just seems like it might be nice to have a bit more power. Thanks again.

I love my Edge and I thought I had all of the mods necessary to keep from burning up your engine, big exhaust, AFE proguard, gauges. That said I have learned that you really, really have to watch your EGT's on the interstate with the cruise control. Recently I was towing a U-Haul 6'x12' trailer, loaded light, real light with about 300lbs. worth of furniture in it. I started in Tampa and headed for Atlanta (flat at first, some rolling hills on in North, Fla and GA). I am watching the EGT's, cruising along hardly ever getting above 800. Going up hill hardly ever getting above 1000. Well apparently, I was lulled into stupidity because my frequent review of the EGT gauge became less so and when I got to Atlanta and looked back at my "high temp" memory setting, it read, gulp... . 2211. I about had to change my drawers on the spot. The trailer combo could not weigh over 2500 lbs. , I had the cruise on 76 mph and the EZ on level 3. I drove the truck for two days with the windows down and the radio off listening for any unusual noises, hisses, clatters or anything. It drives fine, makes no strange noises and seems okay, but I dream of black scalded piston tops at night and wake up from my $5K nightmare in a cold sweat. My Lord I can only hope it just hit that high temp for a friggin' microsecond.

My warning to the masses, you have got to constantly watch the EGT's and stay away from the boost elbow that EZ provides. My turbo would bark like gassy dog every time it shifted in OD when I was merging onto the interstate, I put the stock elbow back on. If you feel compelled to pile on and call me names for the above temperature number not being noticed while driving, I stand ready to face the abuse... I deserve it. You live and you learn but my goodness I hope to not learn to painful a lesson from my evil bombing ways.

Signed,

Shameful in Tampa
