Oops! Anyone want to bet the epa will continue against the other magic black box manufacturers? How about sales records? I wonder if they'll come after the guys who have purchased them next?

If I had a modified truck I sure wouldn't be bragging about it on a website like this one. I would delete any reference to mods in my signature and quit talking about it before nobama and his flunkies in the epa come after you too.

A couple of basic questions that I hope folks will fill in some blanks. Perhaps some members can help:

  • Is Edge still in business?
  • If so (and given today's business climate) ... is there any reason for them to stay in business given this decision.

The part of the ruling (from the linked articlle) states the following... the last sentence is of particulate interest:

Although Edge stopped selling the illegal devices in mid-2011, the consent decree requires Edge to offer to buy back the devices from anyone who possesses one. In order to sell the device back to Edge, the truck from which the device came must be returned to its original factory programming.

If the company is (does go) out of business REGARDLESS of the reason, will the EPA go after the owner of the vehicle to continue to return it to factory condition?

And will they go after the other black box builders and do the same. This just might be the begining, they have to make someone the example. If you have a state inspection program this will be anotherway you could be tracked and found and arrested etc. But it sounds like its the later trucks they are targeting that has more EPA stuff on it. Just don't smoke, and you should be OK.

Ya I heard EPA had been snooping around the SEMA show for the last 5 years . Guess it was just a matter of time . I only use my smarty when I am at the desert ... ..... :-laf

I never really thought the delete sellers would get away with it as long as they did,but since the fines go back to the first unit sold I guess there was no big hurry to do the bust.

I've been a member of TDR for awhile, and I can remember back over 10 years ago when many of the young bucks (primarily) running Edge Comps with showerhead injectors were bragging about their truck's ability to turn day into night - and demonstrated that ability at every other stoplight. A number of us old fogies were warning them back then that such behavior was only going to bite us all in the @$$. It took longer than I thought, but here we are. :(

When I was at Dave Smith's one of the fellas that worked w/ me on my new ride has a close relitive that works at Edge as a code/program guy. As he explained they had/have a suit against them for the 500k, to stop the loss of a company that is not even worth that kind of dough, they are pulling/pulled the offending toys. It was my understanding that by doing this they are off the gallows.
I am sure there is much more to it, but a seemingly good 3rd hand story anyway!!

Well it really was no different with the big rigs of the day they would turn those pumps up so high there was just unburned fuel going out the pipes. Not sure if the "for off road use only" would have worked??

The difference is the new diesels make lots of power as is,in the old days you had to turn them up to get the job done

You still see that every once in a while, but not anywhere near as much as we used to. And you are correct, when you do see it, it most often looks like a bunch of 12-year olds in the truck.

My current trucks are 100% stock and I am thankful that I have left them that way. I remember when we purchased these late model 5. 9L's, everyone was removing the CAT and some of the younger guys around here were giving me a bunch of lip for leaving mine on. They kept telling me that they would immediately plug, cause drivablity problems, check engine lights, etc. Well, after ~400K of driving between the two, the CAT has been zero issue and I don't expect it to ever be. Both of ours have 304 stainless exhausts installed CAT back since the road salt takes care of the factory ones here in a short amount of time. Again, I'm 100% pleased with that decision.

I'm now seeing a bunch of deleted 6. 7L's on craigslist locally that are not selling. Even though we don't have diesel emissions testing here yet, the inspection stations are required to do a visual. These guys who earn a living running these garages and inspection stations are simply not going to risk fines or the potential loss of their inspection liscense to pass these trucks. It sort of brakes my heart to see some of these guys loosing their shirt on these new trucks that they can't get inspected or sell, but I guess it is a sign of the times and a hard lesson to learn.

Yep, I remember reading many of those posts and having similar thoughts. The irony is the smoke commandos trashed their trucks and moved on to gas powered half tons long ago and epa is now going after the guys seeking performance or economy but not soot emission.

I'm not certain but I believe the federal law regarding tampering or removal of emissions equipment on cars and trucks also makes it illegal and punishable by the same large fine to sell one that has been altered. I'm no lawyer but I foresee unsuspecting buyers purchasing one, taking it to an inspection station only to be rejected, and then a very large legal problem tying up the truck, the lender, the seller, and the buyer in a huge mess.

A late model ISB6. 7 without smog equipment but with a big lien held by a bank or credit union is a big problem that has not been fully recognized yet.

Wasn't there a thread on here a while ago (year + probably) where a new member and new diesel owner had purchased a 6. 7L from a dealer that had been deleted and he wasn't aware of it until after taking delivery? If I remember correctly the dealer had to buy the truck back, but I could be wrong.

Yes, your memory is correct. I think it occurred in the Texas Panhandle near or in Amarillo. A TDR member posted his problems with the truck and when it was revealed that he had just purchased a truck with emissions equipment deleted, he was advised to take it back where it had been purchased, apparently from a used car dealer or broker. I think he did and threatened the seller with disclosure to authorities and the story, at least for the TDR member, had a happy ending.

We can only guess what ultimately happened to the truck. Someone probably got cheated and has a big problem today.
