I have an edge and have always used them in both the powerstroke I used to have and the cummins I now have. I like it because of the monitor and shift on the fly power. I see so many people are using the smarty, obviously not as convienent since you have to plug and unplug each time. What is the hype and is it that much better? Is it worth getting rid of my edge and crossing over?

I have an Edge and a Smarty. I kept the Edge for some of its features, but I don't use it as a power adder any more. I love Smarty's tuning, EGT's are about 150 deg. cooler when towing and the power band is alot smoother. To me there is no comparison in the tuning in the two of them. i don't think you would be dissapointed with a smarty but the Edge is a great unit as well.

What year is your truck? The Smarty has some software that works well on 04. 5+ trucks, but not so well on 03/04 trucks, their TNT software to be precise.

POD is now available with Smarty, so you can change power on the fly. EGT's are going to be more manageable with Smarty, and I believe MPG's are also more favorable in the Smarty corner. Their are a few shifting concerns, if you have an auto.

I would not get rid of your Edge, remove it/turn it off, and get someone with a Smarty to download it on your truck, see how you like it's performance. Then you can make an informed decision, without it costing you anything first.

Fill out your sig, makes it easier to help you.

I have an Edge Juice on my truck. My father has the Smarty. I have run his Smarty on my truck for a couple of months and I like the power much better than my Edge. Plan to stack the Smarty. Seems to have better torque down low for better drivablity and power.

I started out with an Edge, but then borrowed a smarty from a friend and bought one a week later. In my opinion, driveability and low end torque is much better with the smarty. The edge is a good unit, I just feel the smarty is better.

I have a Edge Juice with Attitude. It was on the truck when I bought it with 75k miles, I now have 105k. I think I have a messed up injector that I'm blaming on the Edge (and my right foot). I have been keeping it on the stock setting and just using it for the turbo cooldown and gauges. After I fix this injector problem I'm going to look for a Smarty and use that for the power adder. There are too many cool things the Edge does to be worth taking it out for.

Not sure the Juice would cause an injector failure as it adds duration and timing, that being said anything is possible. I lost an injector due to a pressure box that hasn't been back on since  I'm contemplating getting the Hot code to see if I like it but I'm toying with the idea of the smarty also. It all boils down to $, 100 for the Hot or 685 for the Smarty. The turbo timer and gauges are a nice feature as well as shift on the fly, ahh decisions decisions. An intriguing feature on the Smarty is the lower EGT's which is what I'm sweating on the Hot setting. My next mods in addition to the Hot are going to be exhaust and probably a Wilson Thrasher to keep the EGT's in check. Any insight on these thoughts is welcome as I'd like to keep the stock charger as long as possible. Thanks!

Any insight on the smarty and an '03? Read that it may not be the best choice for something older than an '04. 5.

Putting in an upgraded transmission this week and was trying to decide on a Edge Juice or something else (Smarty). I have an '03 3500.

I'm running the smarty beta pod with regular tuning on a 305 motor- runs great-but doesnt like the economy timing, probably due to worn out injectors(Dr. P stg4). runs on sw9 all day every day.

Mine is an 03. 5 (April 2003 Build Date). I have the Smarty Jr and am very happy with it.

Do you have additional gauges to monitor the trucks performance? The rec I received for using the Edge Juice w/Attitude was that it has the ability to monitor/display engine operating parameters. I am not familiar with the with the Smarty or its PoD function but feel that you would be hard pressed to maintain SA on the operating condition of the truck while operating at Smarty applied increased performance levels w/out additional gauges.

Am I off track on this? Appreciate the expertise out there.

I have a Smarty that I bought and installed in my 06, 2500. (The truck is now for sale, so I pulled it out. ) It still works as new, and can be reinstalled.

If you want, you can install it in your truck, ( if it's an 06 or 07) and if you like it, you can buy it for a reasonable price. If you don't, give it back. No harm, no foul.

I'll be back in Santa Cruz, in Aug.

PM me if interested, Ray

PS. IMO, the Smarty is best tuner you can buy for the Dodge Cummins, especially with the new upgrades.

The Smarty is a great product, even on the 03/04 trucks, if I sounded negative above, it was not my intent. The Smarty's TNT software has a few glitches on some 03/04 trucks, not all. The rest of their softwares work great.

I have been hearing rumors that Mads Electronics is currently working to resolve the issues with the TNT software for the 03/04 crowd.

I currently have TNT sw#6 tuned in on my 03 with no problems, in fact it flat out hauls using my EZ for pressure.

So it sounds like the Sarty w/guages or pod is the way to go. RHestand; I wouldve taken you up on your offer but for some reason I missed the rest of this thread, and besides, mine is an 05.

My Smarty Jr works good for me. I chose it because I didn't plan for aftermarket turbo or big injectors. I also didn't want to upgrade my clutch. That being said with my other mods towing on the perf program hasn't slipped it. I tow and wanted a few more mpgs.

I had Juice with hot and now i have Smarty. Drivability with the Juice was much worse. All power comes on at once as soon as you stomp it which feels really rough and hard on the drivetrain. With the Smarty it comes on gradually and the engine is very noticably smoother throughout the entire RPM. My EGT's were much higher with the Edge than the Smarty. I also had issues with my Edge and so did three of my friends. Things such as: resetting every three or so days, map sensor portion blew out on mine, then finally my egt potion of the Edge went south. Overall i was happy with the Edge probably because it was my first tuner but the Smarty blows it away in every department except for the gauge department. Once i got the Smarty i had to get real gauges which i am very happy i did. I gues i'm old school. I could go on and on but in my opinion Smarty is way better and me personally i could never go back to Edge after having the Smarty.

PS. I forgot to mention if something goes wrong with your Edge you have to pay a $60 service charge for them to fix it even if it is their fault. Recently implemented new rule which also swayed me towards the Smarty.

Stay with the edge, smarty's tend to eat up ECM's... . #@$%!

I asked the same question a year or so. I just bought a used smarty a couple months ago from a TDR member who went back to a 12v. I have it stacked with the Tq Dog which is a preassure box so I leave the rail settings stock on the smarty. I am only running SW3 because I have no gauges yet. I like it. i have not seen much of an mpg increase but a big increase in power with no mpg loss. I was romping on it a lot, put the finnishing touches on my tires. I have since calmed down and have the 35s on. It will still spin the 35s loose with the 3. 73 gears. Was able to get the speedo to read properly, I think the edge will show true speed on its display but not able to reprogram the dash display? from my reading the edge runs hotter than the smarty? I am very happy with my smarty. The smoke will only come if you want it to, which I dont. The smoke stories of Smarty are a none issue for me.

i agree with Andy that with the smarty you will have lower egts. I sold my edge a year ago and got a smarty and gauges and am much happier.
