Looking for opinions. Am I better off buying an aftermarket stock exhaust manifold to install just for the smog check, or am I better off doing the radio shack solution? I hate the idea of pulling my three piece exhaust just to put on a stock manifold for a smog check cause the stock manifold wouldn't stay on for long after the smog check.

I like the idea of a 49 state ECM, but I don't know if that'll work for passing smog in CA. Does the state know that an EGR was once installed based on its VIN?

Does anyone have an OE part number for a 49 state '98 12 valve with a manual transmission?

Sorry for the delay in responding. I just got home from 3 weeks in Oregon and Washington.

I suspect you may have a problem with the smog police if you changed out your original manifold. You might get lucky and find a tech who doesn't recognize the changeover.

I'm certainly willing to send you the diagram if you send me your email address. I don't believe the fix will do anything to help pass smog other than keep the CEL from coming on as a result of bypassing the EGR.

Thanks. I'll send you a PM with my email address for the diagram.

I found out from a mechanic yesterday that California updated the SMOG info for diesels. I confirmed that he was correct with a search of the CA DMV website. Now, the smog check applies only to diesel pickups manufactured in 1998 and beyond. My '98 was manufactured in October 1997. I went to the DMV today and registered my truck no problem. I simply showed the kind lady behind the counter the info I printed from the DMV website and she issued my stickers without getting a SMOG check. I think CA finally realized there is a difference between 1998 and 1998. 5 Dodge diesels.

Really glad to hear that DMV clarified the 12 valve smog issue. I read the law to say "only" engines built after 12/31/97 were required to test but there was a lot of confusion about it as you can tell from this forum alone. That's going to take quite a few owners off the hook.

David, sent you the diagram.

Great news. I was in the same boat w/ JacobsonD. Now could someone please send me the diagram @ -- email address removed -- TIA-john

One year ago, the DMV allowed me to re-register my '98 12V without a smog check using the info from above about the engine and truck being manufactured prior to 1/1/1998. My truck was built in October 1997. Well, I tried registering the truck again this year, and the CA DMV said all '98 model year pickups require SMOG check regardless of manufacture date. Has anyone else run into this? The DMV told me that the law was updated to close the loophole.

Now, I'm contemplating using the resistors method mentioned earlier in this thread to try to pass SMOG. Any thoughts? Or will I need to get a replacement exhaust manifold with the EGR port? Currently, my pickup has a 3-piece ATS manifold.

FYI, I live in Nevada and have all the stock EGR parts I removed from my truck when I lived in California. I live in Nevada and have for 10 years, where we don't have the stupid and unreasonable smog rules. I removed the EGR tube because it broke twice and caused a engine fire which Dodge fixed but it was a PIA. If you need the parts e mail me at -- email address removed --. The EGR system was a stupid way for Dodge to sell trucks in California and I have spoken to many people who have had trouble with the EGR tubes. I bought my truck brand new, still have it with 104,000 Miles on it and NEVER plan to sell it.

Hi Bob, do you have a stock exhaust manifold, too? My stock manifold shrank, and I replaced it with a 3-piece ATS manifold. I'm only missing the OEM exhaust manifold; I have the EGR tube and associated pieces.

Geeze, I'm sorry, I don't have the exhaust Manifold, I just capped my old one and am still using it. Good Luck on the repair, I know what a PIA California is, one the reasons I left.
