I've been away for a while, but don't recall seeing this topic:

How does the EGR system work on the 2007 with 5. 9?

I understand how EGR works, in general, but want to find out where the exhaust gas is taken from and where it is put back into the intake side of the 5. 9.

What I am leading up to is this:

1) what down side(s) would there be to blocking the EGR system (other than violating emissions)?,

2) is it possible to block the EGR system?,

3) will it cause engine codes to be set if the EGR is blocked?

4) if the EGR is blocked, will it result in cleaner oil over a longer period?

Thanks,

Jim

EGR on the 04. 5-07's is internal to the motor, there is no external EGR like on the 6. 7. The EGR on your 5. 9 is a function of 4 things.

1)Cam profile. Short exhaust duration, and advanced timing of the exhaust valve leaves more exhasut in the cylinder.

2)Injection timing is retarded to drop peak combustion pressure and temperature, but raises EGT's, all of which improves emissions but drops power/economy.

3)Piston bowl profile, its not as efficient as other Cummins pistions and helps with keeping exhaust in the cylinder, and dropping peak combustion pressure and temp.

4)Restictive turbine housing in the turbo, raises back pressure, again helping more ehxaust stay in the cylinder.

3 of the 4 item's can be easily changed. . Cam, Timing, and Turbo.

You already have a Smarty Jr so your timing is corrected, the turbo and cam are a bit of money thou.

Thanks for the short course education!
I was just trying to think of a way to keep my oil cleaner for a longer time. On my previous truck, a 2001 w/ 5. 9, and the by-pass filter system, my oil stayed clean enough to read the dip stick marks for at least 10,000 miles. On this truck, even with 2 by-pass filters, the oil turns black in a very short time.
Sure am disappointed with the mileage on this truck compared to the previous one. The 2001 would give 18 on a bad day and 21 on a good day; I have gotten as much as 15 with this 2007 only one time and usually it is down in the 13 range. This truck's mileage running empty is almost as good as what the 2001 got when pulling a trailer.

Yeah the oil goes black as soon as you change it. It still does that even with my cam and Smarty Jr. . We'll see if the new turbo helps, that goes on next month.

old thread i know! but i'd really like to know if you [ AH64ID ] found that the turbo made a differance?? really, why is the oil so black?? i just bought my 04.5 & was blaming the former owner for being a neglect freek.... should oil be changed sooner?....?-miles?

The turbo seemed to make a little difference in the UOA, but it was still BLACK as soon as you changed it.

I have the older/better piston design now and another cam grind and it still goes black, just not as fast as the 04.5-07 normally does.

It's the nature of the beast.

Save your money, don't bother with an exhaust an intake, unless your OEM ones are needing replacement. All they will give you is a lighter wallet.

Thanks for the reply John,.. i have intake and exhaust here... so i'll put it on, good advice though,.. i think marketing is way over 'hipeing' these two mods. intake is okay,[''noise''] exh. can be TO loud!! What about oil change?- how many miles?- is the BLACK not a problem? it looks bad! thank you! The 3rd gen sure ride nice. much quieter in the cab then 2nd gen! MATTHEW

UOA is used oil analysis.

7500 miles max, unless you live with an empty truck at 70-80 mph and no traffic.

My oil on the '98.5's dipstick would be reasonably clear for thousands of miles but changing it revealed jet black oil anyway.
I drove a '92 Hino 4 cylinder for 250K until I retired. Best, most reliable truck I ever had the pleasure to drive. It's oil would turn black in little time too but nothing like these 3rd gens.
Despite the oil's appearance my Blackstone reports came back fine.
Fuel economy is near identical to my '98.5.

I have Piers cam, and have used all kinds of different timing profiles. I also have used a couple different turbos (back to modified stocker over a ATS 5000 now). None of it made any difference in the "blackness" of the oil. Probably those crappy piston bowels. I'd love to change them out but that's not gonna happen. My 01 oil stays honey colored for thousands of miles after a change. Same for my wife's Jeep CRD. UOA look good so I don't know what the deal is. I know it's nothing to worry about.

I have the 03-04 pistons in my 05, and it still gets blacker than older engines.... just the nature of a modern diesel.

Black oil might just be black coffee to our CR rams!;) i would love to tinker w/ turbos , ...but time & $.....:( Tinman; what mods. were done on your stock turbo? seems to me this might be doable w/ modest power gains & modest $'s ! thanks! matthew [i have seen too many treads of people chasing the PERFECT turbo......] OR,..do you have '2' turbos?

matthew again,,, i guess i'll try to get to the bottom of my quest... i CAN'T afford buying & trying diff. turbos,. [maybe i DON'T need a diff. one!] i don't have a drive press. gauge & prob. never will, seems to me hi drive pressure is hard on an eng... soooo ...to keep cost down & allow eng. to breath easyer, [smarty jr. & maybe 50hp inj. when i need to replace] is there a proven mod. stock recipe someone can recommend? [my thoughts are that a mod. stock would save $] ALSO .. some of you have taken the road to try & fix the Internal EGR prob. [programer-turbo-cam-pistons-& maybe diff.[?] injector nozzles]...have you increased your MPG????? i would LOVE to hear your thoughts! [w/ my eyes!] thanks so much!!

in what ''order'' would you recommend changing out the ''internal EGR'' parts? Smarty[timing], turbo, cam, exhaust manifold, then pistons?? thanks, matthew
