I just towed from 10,000 from Spokane to Salt Lake and on two grades I held at 1250* to 1275* for 2 minutes or less each time. My manifold and turbo are now a light blue color. Needless to say I'm not impressed with myself right now! With box turned off stock, wot, uphill & loaded she sits right at 1125*.

Don't feel bad, my 600 will hit 1300 stock up hill towing about 12000, my turbo and manifold were blue within 2000 miles. I heard somewhere that Cummins runs these engines around the clock at 1350, it used to be 1250 but they supposedly change that in the last 2 or 3 years so I'm not gonna fret over a minute or two at 1300.

GWoody,

What bothers me is that i had 25k on the clock towing in stock trim and no "Blues". Before I added the VA I could only hit 1150* and no "Blues". This was caused by me and me alone and yes I am my own warranty station. Looks like a good excuse for a turbo and an ATS manifold!

Slight case of the blues on the manifold, compressor side of turbo has a bad case of the ' yellows" though. Have a new ATS manifold in toolbox going in this fall hopefully!

Tinman,

if your looking for a combo guage set up i just installed the BD X-Mon. Pyro, Boost and trans temp all on the a pillar. Add the alarm and max number recall feture and you have a great set up. I got mine for under $400. 00. And the install was a very easy set up.

Will that help the egt issue very much if any?????? I kinda think blue looks cool!!!!!

Hi,

I went and looked at the BD gauges, Nice and about $249 more then I have to pay.

I'll just get the Westeck gauge, and put it in my single pillar pod. But first I need to sell my other gauges.

Metal blues when it gets hot. Just look at all the pipes on motorycles as you walk around. My stainless system is slightly blued. Other than an AFE and a four inch exhaust, my S. O. is stock. I spent long periods not quite tapped out towing my 30' toyhauler through the rockies. Truck just runs better than it used to. Jannerty racing says 1350 is ok all day long, but I don't know if that applies to the Gen III turbo. TST and gauges on the way. Who knows what has been going on under there?

Just did a quick search, and some article said that chrome... begins to blue at 1250 degrees, and that ceramic coated headers dull. It didn't mention other about other metals. I'm personally not going to worry about it. I've seen a zillion blue exhaust pipes before. They also make some stuff to polish it off, but it takes some "elbow grease. "

When I was upping the power on my old 12-valve, I called TST Products and I can't remember if it was Mark or one of his people I was talking to but they said unless you had your truck very heavily fueled without enough air or you were pulling a sled or drag racing your water temp would shut you down before you did any damage to the engine. This was on a 12-valve, don't know if it would make any difference on the newer engines, I wouldn't think it would matter.

I do believe that the top of a piston is designed to run very hot, and also remember that once the exhaust is expelled, pressure and temps drop significantly on the piston, giving it time to cool.

As a matter of interest, back in my Navy pilot days, there were power settings we were allowed to run our engines at indefinitely, and when we exceeded that we were supposed to document how long when we landed. Temperatures above a certain level allowed the turbine blades to stretch more, faster or something like that, and there was a calculation to reduce the overhaul interval for the engine according to how much overtemp it received and for how long. It couldn't just immediately fail, assuming nothing else was wrong, however, just by overtemping it.

I think it pretty much has to be impossible to torch a stock engine during any normal (even severe towing) driving you would do with the truck.

I'm anxious to get my gauges. When I get them installed, I'll hook up the toy hauler (loaded to the tits) and head up the mountain. That's pretty near full throttle for several minutes. I'll check the EGT and post it. My truck is stock except for AFE and 4" free flow exhaust. Then I'll run it again after I install the TST I ordered!

Out of here. I must just be in the mood to blab.

For kicks I hooked up my toyhauler and drove up 8 east just outside of San Diego. Theres a fairly steep hill about a mile long. With the TST on 2x2 I could hold 70 mph wot and the temps were just shy of 1250. Forget about 3x3 temps went through the roof!!Ill be pulling it up the grapevine this evening and plan on trying different settings.
