If I understand what you are saying, mine works opposite of yours.
If I am pulling a grade with my trailer in 6th gear, I have to watch the EGTs. I don't run out of power, but the EGTs climb steadily. When/If I hit 1200 degs, I downshift to 5th and the RPMs increase, lowering the EGTs. I have not found any hills that have caused the EGTs to rise to 1200 degs while in 5th gear, maintaining 60 MPH. I pull a 27' travel trailer which weighs around 7K. Total truck & trailer run around 16K when I am fully loaded. This is "light" compared to what many folks are towing.
