Since my original post asking for opinions about the Superchips D-Box, I have a little more info regarding the family member's core issues and requirements now...

My bother-in-law is looking for a mild performance upgrade. He owns and operates a diesel concrete pump truck, so knows all the why's and benefits of guages. He's not on the best of terms with his dealer and is worried that having an EGT gauge would give the dealer reason to snoop around further and he'd get his warranty voided even if he had removed the fueling box before taking it in.

He had called Superchips and was told that the D-Box didn't raise EGT's enough to worry about a guage. When I saw that the D-Box appeared to be an Edge EZ in disguise, I told him how you all strongly recommend the guage. So anyway, that's why we are trying to gather more info on the Superchips box. He'd just like a performance upgrade that doesn't require "extra" stuff that could tip off the dealer.

If dealers see an EGT guage (or others for that matter) do they go checking to see if the MAP and data link connectors have been messed with recently?

Has anybody had this happen?

Any other advice I could pass along would be much appreciated?

I don't know anything about the D-Box, but as far as dealer's go, it really depends on the dealer. Some don't even notice if you've got stacks in the bed and that your rear tires need to be replaced already (and you only have 10k on the truck) while other dealers get suspicious when they see fingerprints on the hood release.

As far as guages go, a lot depends on wether or not you/he will be towing or just running empty. My truck in completely STOCK form got the egt's up to 1400 (yes, that's not a misprint, 1400) hauling the 5'er up to colorado. With an edge or similiar product which incorporates a map sensor "fooler", the egt's would actually be lower (as long as you use the "boost elbow" to allow more than 20lbs boost).

The simple thing would be to just ask the dealer, "Hey, I saw a truck with some cool looking guages and I want to add some too, will this effect anything???" etc...

Personally I would not have a problem running an EZ without gauges as long as the boost elbow or a turnbuckle was used. The potential is there however, to have some problems and gauges would alert you to them before there was a serious problem. There is risk in everything, what you are comfortable with is entirely up to you.

I went from a dead stop to 80MPH with my EZ equipped truck pulling 10K of trailer. It was 104* outside and my EGT clipped 1250 at 80 in 5th gear WOT. So if towing light or empty I think your just fine with an EZ only. My EGTS go up alot faster with the stock air cleaner but they do not peak any higher. Empty I can get to 1100 at about 110mph :D just my . 02

DHenry,

I put my gauges in first and had to take it to my dealer b/c my drain hose was broken off of my fuel filter housing, but the guy who worked on it said nice gauges and love the sound. I think it all depends on the dealer. I don't frequent the place that often but one of the guys (mechanic) even had a BD plug and power on his 2001 with the gauges.

Dan...

From what I've read here several times, it takes sophisticated dealer personnel and hardware to detect traces left by an EZ box. Most have said it would take a Cummins tech to find it. I dunno... . but if I was back at the beginning thinking about this issue, I'd personally not be worried about it. Obviously, don't use the velcro strip to secure your box... . I use a zip-tie.

As far as the EGT guage, my attitude is..... DC shoulda had this on the truck from the factory, and too bad if you don't like it or my Plastic Jesus.

Take it to a diffrent dealer if you have too!

i have a stealer in my area that throws the book at me every time i'm in there. finally i came to my senses and drove the extra 10 miles and went to another dealer. these other guy's are way cooler the my local dealer. no problems:D ... . james

I have the D-Box. I was able to buy it locally. :p

I ran it for a week with out the Elbo. My EGTs never went over 1100... .

But all I pull is a 16' Landscape trailer. ;)

I don't worry about the warranty, the benefits of that box far out weigh that.

Can't wait til I save enough for some transmission upgrades.
