Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Shrader valve?

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission fuel pressure question...

So there I was heading up a pretty steep hill approx 10-12 miles long with I think a 6-12% grade, elevation going from 1800 to 5500. EGTs 1200 and engine temp 190-220 an average speed of 30 to 35 mph. I had plenty more pedal to go but I felt I was pushing the limits. I know how you guys love details, here they are.

My truck, listed in my sig. below.

Truck bed loaded with a weeks worth of camping gear for 4 (3 of them women, so even more gear). 500-1000lbs

Approx 7,000lbs of trailer, jeep and even more camping gear. (I got to take gear the gear for a bunch of others going with us as well)

So now the big question, what do I need to do to get my egt and engine temps down and maybe get up at a faster speed. I was thinking of canning the egr (along with the related soot) and maybe going with a different intake. Kind of at a loss I could use any suggestions. Thanks Robert

I don't know much about the Cummins EGR, but I suspect it does indeed have a BIG impact on your EGTs. I live at 9000' and have to climb the mountain home everyday - it's a 20 mile run uphill with several steep parts. I hauled a 2000 lb load of pavers home the other night at 55-60 the whole way and never went over 1100. I try to keep my RPMs about 2000 when climbing and that keeps the EGTs under control. My engine is stock though. We'll see how she behaves in a couple of weeks after the BOMBs have hit.

Well I can tell you what worked for me, a bigger turbo. I kept the same plate & put on an HX40-16. I was pushing 1500 degrees before & was waaaay down with the HX40. I can't remember the difference, but it was substantial.

That was over 5 yrs ago & now with the HTT type hybrids out there, you could really cool things down & keep great spool up. Oo.

I'm having the same issues pulling about 14k lbs in some of the same terrain.

I also pulled a guy's fiver under 10k to Needles, NV a few weeks ago (122 degrees there) and even had some high water temps unloaded on the way back.

This does not just happen during hot weather but on pretty much any steep pull and we've got a couple of really good ones between castaic and paso robles on the 5.

Factory fan and fairly new radiator... temps hit the over 200 mark & then (sometimes) I'm guessing the clutch kicks in (can't ever hear it if it does) and temps lower quickly but it seems to be intermitent (quick cool down). I ordered dakota digital boost and pyro to replace the banks gauges so that I have a more accurate reading and I'm thinking about a mechanical temp as well. New to this truck so I'm still finding it's sweet spots.

thanks

BTW I have a non CA emissions truck.

And don't we have a bigger turbo already?

Not sure I would be worried about 1200 degree EGT temps, 1400+ yes, mine pushes the 1400+ but I can throttle/gear/speed control that, it's the water temp I'm concerned with.

JoeyJ,

Thanks for the reply guys. I will check into the bigger turbo and maybe a new intake. Take care,Robert

Robert,

What is your rpm at 35 mph with the 4. 10 gears? The 3k governor spring kit might help.

If I am pulling a long grade I have to get out of either OD or TC lockup to maintain enough rpm keep the egt down.

I blocked off my EGR as soon as I got it. It made no sense to put dirty, hot exhaust gas back into filtered, intercooled intake air. heres a pic of what I did. I couldn't tell you what it did to EGT's, cause I didn't have gauges at that point.

As far as the engine temp, when was the last time you flushed your radiator? Mine did the same thing until I changed the fluid, then it cooled right down.
