EGT’s running higher

Hello TDR world. Been awhile since I’ve visited these pages.
I just bought a used 2006 3500. The mileage is 112000 on the truck. The engine was replaced a approximately 40,000 miles under warranty. A reconditioned motor was installed.
The original owner said that the egt’s were running about 200 degrees hotter under normal day to day driving.
I noticed this when I test drove the truck. On a grade not towing it will easily go to 1200 degrees.
The turbo is new,the injectors have been replaced (stock) and I had the cat checked out and it is working properly.
Any ideas on what to look for? Would low fuel pressure cause the engine to run higher egt’s?

Why was the previous engine replaced?

What is the final drive ratio? What size of tires and wheels are you running? What was the percent of grade and what speed were you driving. What are the EGT's when cruising at 65 mph on flat ground?

Without more information it could be anything from normal to engine problems, or faulty EGT gauge / sensor, or cooling system problems.

I notice your signature references a 2001 truck. The common rail engines like in your third generation 2006 truck do run hotter EGT's than the second generation 24 valves.

John the engine was replaced because of catastrophic failure. I believe a piston went thru the side of the block. Gear ratio is 4:10. This is the first time I’ve driven a 4:10 and it feels different. Not as quick a response. Wheels are stock. EGT’s run about 900 degrees on level surface at 65. I’m going to take a closer look at the EGT’s on the highway to get more accurate readings. EGT gauge was replaced by previous owner as part of troubleshooting the increase in egt’s. I’m concerned about towing as previous owner stated EGT’s was always a problem. He was towing a heavy trailer over 15,000.

Whats your boost PSI? Are you sure you don't have a boost leak? Low boost = high EGT's... might also explain why its slow to respond as well.

Krew boost can be as high as almost 30, mostly around 20 and less depending on throttle. How do you test for a boost leak?

There's a tool you can buy or build. The following link explains it pretty well. Is the 30 at WOT? I just checked elsewhere and that seems to be inline with expectation...

Has anyone checked the integrity of the EGT gauge? Is it reading accurate?

Motörhead the previous owner swapped out the EGT gauge and probe. I’ve got a laser temp reader. I’m thinking of using that to compare readings .

I read through a couple of times to see if that had been mentioned... 900 cruising seems high, even with 4:10's.
Your boost pressure is about right for stock programming. Question, Did the previous owner say it ran hotter egt's AFTER the replacement engine? How is the "Seat of the Pants" power feeling? Not being real familiar how our trucks fuel timing is set but I wonder if there is a fuel timing issue?

Motörhead, I’m going to take a closer look at the egt’s On the road. I believe the 200 degree increase was more recent. Engine was swapped out at 40,000 miles. Odometer shows 112,000 now.im also trying to track down where an oil buildup is coming from. I have a small leak from the oil pan gasket area and I think some from blow by.
