My understanding is an original HX35 turbo can last hundreds of thousands of miles if used and maintained appropriately. If there are no boost leaks in the system, however the at idle EGTs have crept upward over the last 10 yrs, could this be due to some slight internal turbo tolerance? The unit was off last winter to replace the exhaust manifold. Neither the compressor or turbine showed any evidence of play. The EGT probe was mounted in the exhaust elbow behind the turbo by the original owner in 2000.

I wouldn’t worry about EGT at idle. There are way to many variables to get any kind of consistent measurement.

Agreed.

Just idling with the ac on, will raise the temp. Is your air filter clean? Post turbo, will run about 300 at idle. EGT gauges age as well and can become unreliable.

You mention "was mounted in the exhaust elbow behind the turbo by the original owner in 2000", as in past tense. Is it currently mounted in the same location.

If you change the location to pre-turbo, then temperatures will be higher, even at idle.

The Air filter is a new clean Napa 6637 Donaldson BHAF high flow in a heat shield box the original owner put on prior to 2011, when I got it. EGTs on road with and without are like it was when I first drove it. Cheers

Yes, the probe is in the same location.

Any suggestions on whether to I should replace the K&N heat shield setup the original owner installed with some version of a cold air intake fitted to fender opening?
