Air Bags vs Rancho 9000's

Ladders, on trailers and motorhomes

If you are stock then no, I would not say you "need" guages to tow with. I see in your sig that you have the plate forward. That can cause seriously high EGT by itself, let alone towing. I would guess that 95% or more of the CTD's out there are bone stock with no guages, towing regularly with no problems. If you modify it I would put guages on. They are also nice to have for diagnostic reasons and just keeping an eye on your enine, MHO, hope it helps.

Interesting question FD5. I don't know if I've ever read where sliding the stock plate forward in an auto pump get's into dangerous EGT range. The safe answer is get the guage, cheap insurance, but I for one would sure like to hear what your EGT is running.

Of course, the problem is low RPM & lots of fuel. EGT really goes up fast. Solo, we're typically not in that RPM range for long enough. But towing 5k, you are in the lower RPM range longer. Wonder if the stock plate forward is enough fuel to get you into trouble?

High EGT's Stock

I started with gauges first before other modifications. My stock HO was showing 1300*+ deg. when towing in the Rocky Mts. !

After mounting the EZ box, I can hold it at 1225*.

Don't see anywhere NEAR these temps down near sealevel- must be the high altitude.

EGT Gage

I'm sorry I did not get an EGT gage earlier. I knew that I should let my truck run at idle to cool and I tried to do it when I had been towing. Now that I have a gage I find that Iwas routenly turning the engine off with the EGT hot enough to cook the turbocharger oil. I wish I had had this gage earlier.
