Electric fan for factory transmission cooler

I want to add an electric fan to the front of the factory transmission cooler. Just put it on a manual switch for off road 4x4 use when you are going too slow to get good air flow.



The cooler is only 7" wide. I was thinking about a 10" fan to get more air.



Has anyone who has done this provide that make and part number of the fan they used? Hate to waste the time of trial and error... .

Sounds like a good idea!! Let us know how it works! I might do something like that to keep my transmission cool in stop and go traffic.

I'm still thinking about mounting a second trans cooler & fan in the cab for faster heat in cold weather. My trans fluid gets hot a long time before my water temp does. I need to figure out how to mount it, and how to route fluid through it in the winter & through the reg. cooler in the summer. Surprised somebody hasn't tried this already, I don't want to be the first!

Dennis, one thing to think about is a hose rupturing in the cab. I know if I had a passenger burned by hot transmission fluid while riding with me I'd feel pretty guilty.

I know if I were sprayed with hot transmission fluid while driving it might cause an accident:--)

The transmission cooler is mounted too far off center to get much flow from the main fan. I think an electric fan would help a lot. I have seen over 250 degrees when off road.

air cooled VW's use a thermostatic switch that lets oil thru a second cooler when the temp. gets hot enough. try BERNIE

BERGMANN (SP) as the cooler and switches are aftermarket items.

Thin Enough?

I have searched many sites, and tried many electric fans from various makers. I have yet to find a fan that will fit between the grill and the trans oil cooler.



From my measurements the maximum thickness has to be less that about 1 3/4", measured at the motor. Thinner yet would be better!



If anyone finds a 8-12" diameter, thin-enough fan, please post the maker/model#.

I have been wanting to add a fan to my trans cooler also. The problem is the clearance between the grill and the cooler. LsFarm is right in that you can't find a thin enough fan. My trans temps go way up in stop and go traffic and that bothers me. What about plumbing in a second cooler with or without a fan?

Summit Racing has a fan that is 2 1/4" thick... I was thinking you might get away with mounting it lower. Have the motor, thickest part of the fan, behind the bumber. Guss I might try it.

What about mounting the fan somewhere and running some of that flexible HVAC duct to the front of the trans radiator? You could get a sheetmetal shop to make a very thin flange that mounts to the front of the trans radiator for not a lot of money.
