I have a '95 3/4 ton that never had the trailer tow package. The previous owner added a mopar hitch and 7 way trailer plug with one of the t-type connections to connect to the existing truck tail light wiring.
This has been fine for the past few years, never pulling any huge trailers.
Now, I have a 4 horse slant with lots of running lights, trailer brakes, and interior and loading lights. I also want to add better backup lights to my truck.
I was thinking I should run 4 separate wires (or one multiconductor wire if I can find one) out to the back of the truck, 10ga or so. They would be for 1) truck backup lights, 2) trailer running lights, 3) trailer brakes, and 4) trailer aux lights.
Does that sound like a reasonable approach?
Then I guess I need to add fuses or circuit breakers to each circuit and either a HD switch or relay setup for each circuit.
Do you have any better ideas?
