Eliminate The Central Axle Disconnect On 4x4

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Is it dangerous to mix different tires on a truck?

Nowel where did you go???? We have talked about this before and it is a pretty high dollar conversion, but it gets worse the 2002's are full time with no disconnect at all.

CAD Replacement

If there was a conversion kit available for a reasonable price then YES . I'm tired of emailing Warn Industries with this requested and still they respond with a lame answer about not enough interest at this time to make it profitable.

Ok, just to show my ignorance to the whole world... ... .

I grew up around manual hub 4x4's, so I am well familiar with having to get out, lock the hubs, rock back forth until the front gears engage, then drive out of the mess you're in. Are we talking about basically going from our shift on the fly system to such a completely manual system?

I would really be interested in some other type of system that would allow us to engage the front gears from inside the cab, as climbing out to manually twist the front hubs when you're already up to you whatsis in mud/snow/water/whatever ain't my idea of fun..... not to mention the need to be able to rock back and forth until the front gears engage may not always be possible... .

I'd actually keep the CAD system on there Tom. What I really want is to have the manual hubs on the front so that the front axle isn't spinning all the time, wasting fuel, and putting wear on the u-joints, etc. You just leave the front hubs locked if you think you are going to need 4wd and then shift on the fly like we do now. The other advantage is that if you do blow a front u-joint/scatter an axle, etc then you can unlock the hubs and drive it home in 2wd.

Dynatrac

It's fun to see the enthusiasm for this subject.

The system I'm referring to is manufactured by Dynatrac. I guess I lost half of you right there:)

They have three kits available. The first kit will not completely eliminate the vacume operated sleeve on the axle. It runs $1500 for the stage I kit. I'm not selling these products BTW, just throwing this out for discussion.

The stage II kit will eliminate the vacume operated sleeve and upgrades the axles as well.

These kits come with Warn hubs. The #2 kit runs about $2500.

The #3 kit is the beefyest and runs #3200.

Check this out-

Stage III Kit:

Kit includes the following components:

· 8 on 6. 5 Dynatrac wheel hubs (customer to re-use rotor) (2)

· Heavy duty spindle kits (2)

· 35 spline 1. 5" diameter Inner axle shafts (2)

· Dynatrac rotor adapters (2)

· Dynatrac Heavy Duty 35 Spline 1. 5" diameter outer axle shafts (2)

· LH Inner axle seal (1)

· LH seal housing (1)

· Spicer 1480 series axle joint (2)

· Set of Warn Premium manual locking hubs (35 spline) (1)

· Dynatrac vacuum motor Lock-in retainer (to keep motor engaged) (1)

· Carrier side gears (2)

*All kits include inner and outer wheel bearings, races, and seals plus all hardware*

$3,195. 00 List

Benefits:

· Manual locking hubs reduce wear and increase fuel economy by preventing parts from rotating constantly during 2WD operation.

· Increases reliability by eliminating troublesome axle disconnect operation.

· Lower cost of ownership - Wheel bearings and seals are dramatically cheaper to maintain, and can be easily serviced for longer life, even under severe conditions.

Wow, you're right Charles. dynarape!

A true part-time 4WD system is one of the benefits of owning an "old" first gen. :D Wouldn't mind having a P-pump and an NV5600 though...

2 rich for my wallet

So now if someone wants to get a group purchase started for the stage 1 kit and it ends up <$1,000 I could still be interested.

woo hoo, I love the thought of getting out, walking through the mud and putting the hubs in. That is all part of the fun when out wheeling!

When you head off road, lock 'em in - before you get into something nasty. Then you'll also have the bonus of momentum if you see something coming up, you can pull the transfer case into 4WD on a roll, and hopefully go right through instead of stopping in it and locking the hubs.

Or, maybe you already know this and really prefer getting out in the mud. :D :) :D

I checked into the Dynatrac Hubs when they first came out. Once I got over the price shock I asked if the kit would work on my 02 and the guy at Dynatrac said no, because there is no provision for the A. B. S. ring in the hub. If you get the hub kit make sure it will work w/the anti-lock brakes.

I see a few people have mentioned that their 02"s do not have the central axle disconect, mine does and it is an 02. I would like to learn more about why some do and some don't. If anyone has any info please share.

I have to admit to being an old fashioned enough kind of guy that I have always liked the good old fashioned lock out hubs but after thinking about it, I dunno. I have over 135k on the "cad" system and have had no problems. I had to replace the wheel joints at about 100k miles. Even with the extra drag I'm getting about 20mpg out of the truck and I don't have to get my boots muddy. What advantages of dumping the system am I missing?

Several reasons come to mind for me as to why to do this change.

1) Simplicity

2) My truck would not go into 4 wheel twice in important situations, once on a -2 tide while pulling out my boat and below the end of the ramp (with water coming up). Not sure exactly what the problem was, but there had been an extended freeze and some slushy road conditions.

3) 4 wheel low any time you want without vacuum switches, etc.

4) Ever priced out the sealed bearing unit on these trucks?

5) Of most importance to me... . Preference!

I will do this swap when funds are available.

A Solid Pro Opinion

Thanks for your thoughts Andy :)

I liked the part about trying to pull the boat out during a rising tide after a strong low tide:eek:

That would leave an indelible mark on ones memory=O

A friend of mine has just finished a Jeep CJ with a 502 chevy. He paid 11,400 for front and rear Dyna-track Dana 60s, Spool in rear and air locker in front, disc brakes all around.
