Well, I got most of the mods done to my truck. Thanks to everyone that helped guide me in the first thread:

https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=154703&page=1

mods on the truck were:

edge turbo w/ new downpipe/intercooler pipe

edge HOT juice with attitude

bully dog power pup stacked with edge

intake

MBRP muffler (rest of system stock)

fass 95

DTT trans/convertor etc...

Took he truck to the track for an out of state event I was involved with. Wasnt a truck event, but I wanted to make a few passes. Dropped the trailer, made a pass and then another. I didnt have the flexplate or output shaft in the truck since they are back orderdd through DTT, so I launched very light.

On the second pass, the truck started shaking violently in the back half. I let off and coasted back to the pits. I was 8 hours from home, so I called tow truck for the truck and another for the trailer. I automatically assumed it was the flexplate since everyone warned me that was next to go and I heard clanking and convinced myself that is what it was (didnt even pop the hood the whole time, was ******/embarressed and I just assumed)

Towed the truck to a DTT trans builder in Indiana. Jack has always been there to help me out (located near Angola, IN). I called him and he was sitting there Sat night waiting for truck to arrive to get it done immediately so I could pick up the next day. Truck was to arrive at 12AM, but didnt get there until 3AM. Jack skipped church and had it removed Sunday Morning. Too bad it wasnt the flexplate. reinstalled the trans. Jack still bent over backward to help me and I appreciated him doing all he could. Charged me $400 instead of the normal $500 since he felt bad for me and he is just a good guy and actually cares (spent alot of time talking to people trying to help me get the truck fixed. :/ I got a ride back to Ohio at this point

Then had the truck towed to Daves Diesel in Indiana, per Jacks recomendation. Rick for Daves Diesel has been great. They went and got the truck and had it apart the next morning within an hour or two. They called me with the bad news that the head dropped a valve seat and the block isnt rebuildable. Also told me the new turbo was shot since they found metal in the exhaust.

The truck is an 04. 5 w/ 25k miles. No warranty with all the junk I have on it. Some suggested removing all the mods and taking it in, but I decided to just bite the bullet and get a used engine installed. I want the truck back fast and didnt want all the hassles. Rick from Daves diesel found a local engine with 19k on it for $5500 (they were asking $6500, but came down). I found others in the 4500 range, but I was in a rush and this was convenient. Rick is going to help me find a core to turn in since he said they need a core and I need my old engine. He said that shouldnt be a problem. They picked the engine up last night and are dropping it in today. I am planning on picking it up the truck tomorrow. Estimate for labor etc... is around $1400 roughly, but just an off the cufff estimate. Sounds reasonable to me with all they have done with towing, picking up the engine, calming me down etc... I have been a nervous wreck and Rick from Daves Diesel has been GREAT. Cant believe the truck will be running today or early tomorrow. They started on the truck Tuesday morning, aquired an engine and got it installed.

Taking the truck back to where it was months ago. basic edge box, stock turbo. My emotions run the spectrum right now. More than anything, pis sed at myself for going this far with the truck. I spent alot before this mess, then basically doubled what I spent to go back to how it was. :( This breakage is going to total somewhere in the $10,000-$11000 when it is all said and done, including the turbo it ruined, Trans R+R that wasnt needed, used engine with labor, and towing truck and trailer. Being out of town and with a trailer didnt help any. Neither did the fact I was in a rush to get my truck back.

Rick from Daves Diesel said he has seen this happen on stock trucks. My egts' never went over 1400 and boost was always under 34 with the new turbo (38ish stock turbo). Is this a very common problem I should be worries about happening again?

Not sure if I will keep the truck or not. I guess it depends how the truck looks and feels when I get it back. Just the thought of the engine being pulled and people working on it me makes me sick. Just paid big bucks to get it detailed at a high end body shop near me. Hopefully the truck looks as new as it did when it is all done. If it does and I can find a way to trust it, maybe I will keep it. Cant imagine the new engine having the same problem. :/

BIG thanks to Jack and Rick from Daves Diesel for going above and beyond to get my truck fixed in a hurry.

Thats my story. :{

My first question is what year engine did you buy to put in it?

04. 5+ or a 03/04 ?

And wow, I am just floored! I mean it makes me worry that the funny sounds I hear sometimes are something going bad...

Is the valve seat issues on all 6BT cummins? or just new 04. 5 motor?

I feel for ya man

They only started putting pressed in valve seats in 2001. 5 ETH motors.

My early 2001 ETC did NOT have pressed in valve seats.

To the best of my recollection (I could be wrong):

Inserted pressed valve seats started with the 2001 HO engines and then continued to the present day with the Dodge product.

I am sorry to hear about the loss, but I am glad you are getting it back together!!

Tom, check my "head off" thread there are pictures of the valve seats.

Side Note: I fully expect to burn up or destroy my 2004. 5 engine at some point. Truthfully I'll be happy if it makes it another full year of sledpulling.

Was it the Edge BB turbo? Supposed to be warranted for 1 yr. no matter what the damage or cause? They haven't been out that long, that's why I mention it.

Bully Dog stacked with Edge Hot Juice and only hit 1400*?? Thats baloney.

before calling BS, why not ask what levels I run it on and other questions to understand. I surely have no reason to lie. I am already paying the piper, no benefit to lie. Sorry if your findings are otherwise, but I posted FACTS on my situation and truck.

I ran the hot juice on 5 and the power pup on the low setting and at the end of a 100mph run, it was approachign 1400 when I let off. I tried other settings like level II with level 4 on the power pup, but didnt have alot of time to mess with it. Only had it a week. I would NEVER keep my foot on the pedal if EGTS went over that. too scared to have issues. So much for trying to be careful.

Never really had bad egt's on the truck, even with the stock turbo. never got remotely close to 1300 with the regular juice. I think it was more like 1100 range.

I will be sending the turbo back to edge. Hopefully I can sell it and turn around and sell it to get a few bucks back.

Wont have nothing done except the basic juice box, fass kit, trans upgrade and a MBRP muffler.

Will probably call edge and get the box re flashed to be the non hot version too.

Too scared of this truck.

Is this just a freak accident or does this happen frequently with modded trucks. What's the main culprit for something like this to happen?

Fairly common...

See a few a month come through the shop.

Most of it can be prevented.

Owners complain of knocking, poor fuel economy, and low power all the time, but they continue to drive the truck.

This guy had his truck diagnosed with a bad injector, was told NOT to drive, but he took the truck to Vegas and back.

Forgot to add...

Main culprit that I have seen personally is a failing injector.

Fills one cylinder with WAY more fuel then the rest. Mo fuel = mo heat = dropped seat = new engine... #ad

Sorry for your engine loss. I have done alot of business at daves diesel, rick is a super fellow to deal with. Hope things get better for you. coobie

So is there something we can do to prevent this??? Just wondering, I have the head off right now. Would like to do it now if anything. Lee.

When my valve seat dropped Piers suggested going around each valve seat and center punch in several places this will stop them from falling out won't stop them from getting loose but will save your engine if one does get loose

I thought I read somewhere that there was a valve seat change between the 555 and 600 engines that made them better?

Justin,

I had to pull the motor. On my way to Daytona for bike week, seems that the injection pump seal let about 20-25 gallons of diesel into the oil pan. Yeah, I covered about 70 miles before running clean out of fuel. Just before Indy I was dead on the side of the road. Blew it all out the breather. Tore the motor down, luckily the block was ok. Just had it honed, new rings, bearings, etc. Had to turn the mains, just polish the rods. Now to take care of the head and the rest of the up grades. Lee.
