Hey guys what exactly is available for the 24v in the way of dress up? (chrome kit, valve cover, etc... ) Any part numbers would be great!!

------------------
99 Dodge 4x4 Quad Diesel auto. K&N, 4" JRE, 5" chrome tip, matched 275 Bosch injectors, 2. 5" Skyjacker leveling kit, Silencer ring MIA. (more to come)

I haven't seen anything available. Some of the others have switched to the red valve cover that is available for non-Dodge applications. I've thought about just having mine chromed. Not sure what the thing is made of (cast iron?) so I don't know if it can be chromed.

------------------
98. 5 3500 QC 4x4, Driftwood/Mist Grey, 5 spd, 3. 54, 19. 5 Alcoa's, Ranchhand bumpers, DeeZee toolbox, "Scotty Air", TST PowerMax2, VA, 275's, Autometer Gauges, Centerforce clutch, Upgraded fuel lines (JRE and Aeroquip), MagHytec Diff Cover, PacBrake, Cowl Induction Hood

Good luck finding them if any are laying around. The best thing you can do is have them plated. If they're not made of iron or steel, they can plate them first with a "primer" metal, and then chrome plate over it.

Test mule for Auto Wurks Diesel race program

Genos sells a chrome alternator bracket... about the only thing I have seen for the 24 valve.

You can just polish up the stock one - I warn you, it's a lot of work! But it looks awesome! This thread has a lot of valve cover options in it - https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum4/HTML/002579.html .

About 60 hours so far #ad
!! I was sick of working inside the letters and had a big show coming up so I just put it on the truck. I'll finish up the letters and clearcoat it this winter - I'd guess another 30 hours or so I'll have it completely done! #ad

Well looks awesome although I can't imagine doing anything for 60 hours, well almost anything.

I had heard that Cummins switched to Magnesium valve covers. Did I hear wrong?

Jeff, the '98. 5 through '01. 5 valve covers are made of cast aluminum which can be polished (as Steve did) or chrome plated (by a good chrome plater... heavy emphasis on good). Aluminum is more difficult to plate correctly... usually only a custom plating shop will provide adequate results. As in most finishing processes, the outcome is dictated by the quality level of the prep. work. In chrome plating, that would be the polishing before and between the triple plating steps (copper/nickel/chrome)... especially the copper plating step.

Mike, I don't think the newer valve covers ('00 and newer) are made of magnesium. When I replaced my '98. 5 valve cover with a '00 valve cover I noticed a major weight disparity between the two... the '00 valve cover weighs 3 3/8 pounds less. . or roughly, one half to two thirds of the '98. 5 counterpart! After careful scrutinization between the two (including wall thickness measurements), I noticed Cummins made the newer style (i. e. , black) valve cover "cheaper" (i. e. , thinner wall thicknesses). It could have a slight "mag. " content in the aluminum alloy however, it is not pure magnesium. . or close. Needless to say when I take one of my two covers in to be chrome plated it will be the '98. 5 cover. I'm also going to have my Banks High-Ram intake manifold chrome plated at the same time. #ad

groundpounder, it's a labor of love... right Steve? I've been there many times before. If you don't clear coat the polished surface you will experience that "labor of love" on almost a bi-weekly basis..... when you're cleaning/polishing it. #ad
#ad
Also, here again, as in plating, a quality application of the clear coat is essential... the clear coat does NOT like to adhere to the polished surface. Clear powder coating should provide superior adhesion and durability however it may not appear as clear as other clear coat processes. Flip a coin... and live with it. #ad

Yes, the valve cover can be sand blasted. It would have to be sand blasted if it were to be powder coated or "Cermachromed" although, I'm not sure how the surface is prepped prior to clear powder coating. If a sandblasted appearance is what you are after, you may want to have it glass beaded... this will produce a much finer etching. Glass beading is the process used on guns prior to bluing (sometimes) or parkerizing.

Steve St. L: In searching for your nice-looking polished valve cover, I couldn't help but notice your wonderful fuel filter relocation system in the photo! #ad

On a lighter note, since the valve cover is aluminum, it can be stripped down (blasted) and either anodized (they make some very nice looking colors these days -- black, red, gold, blue, etc. ), or powder coated (which also is available in many colors, and is very durable, and cheap!).

My plan is to obtain an unfinished Cummins valve cover and have it powder coated Patriot Blue, and do the lettering in Driftwood--matching the truck's paint scheme #ad
The most difficult part may be procuring an unpainted valve cover to eliminate the paint-stripping/sanding step. This is assuming that powdercoatings do best on bare metal. . . I don't know. But I want to work it over and have a nicely smoothed out piece with casting imperfections removed before sending it over to the powercoat boys.

Vaughn

drag racer, you will need to verify whether the valve cover is die cast or sand cast aluminum prior to anodizing. If it is die cast (as I suspect) the appearance of the anodizing will look terrible.

Vaughn, all three places I've used for powder coating have ALWAYS sand blasted the parts prior to applying the powder. Sand blasting is necessary to promote good adhesion.

Paint stripper could be used to remove the original finish prior to refinishing if you don't prefer the sand blasting method.

Good point about the type of casting, John.
I'm actually happy with the appearance of the stock cover, and was just throwing out some ideas for the group. But if I wanted to go for a new look, powder coating is hands down the way to go.

drag racer, I have been contemplating powder coating my Banks High-Ram intake as well as my valve cover (as opposed to chrome plating) although, I'm concerned as to how well a contrasting overlay (of black powder coating) will look (i. e. , the quality of application as opposed to the contrast of colors). As I was considering the use of a light base color, removing the powder coating from the ribs, lettering etc. would not produce an acceptable contrast.
