I found a 12 valve 5. 9 turbo for a really nice price. Thing is, I am pretty sure it is out of a medium duty truck and not a Ram. My question is, can it be modified the same ways as the ones that were in a ram? What stuff is different?

Thanks

It depends on the year of the engine... . but if it's equipped with the Bosch P7100 inline pump... you have yourself a good deal on your hands.

The engine blocks... . and pretty much everything that bolts to it is exactly the same between the versions used for Dodge and everyone else including the medium duty stuff... .

What do you plan on using this 12-valve for?

I have wanted one for some time now, because of the milage they can get and the power they will produce without so much electronic involvment. I would buy an older ford truck swap in the cummins and then modify it.

Sounds like a cool project... .

FWIW, the C8. 3L in that crew cab F*rd (the one with the Eaton transmission... ) gets low 20's for MPG... .

I think you may be missing the vacuum pump and power steering pump combo. Most of the medium duties have an air compressor on the engine for the brakes.

Just a couple of things I thought of which might rise up and cause small problems. The alternator mounting will be a little different depending on what you use and watch the turbo, there are a couple different mounting styles of manifolds used depending on truck setup. The truck one might be too high and cause hood or heater box interference. If there is anything I can research for you, please PM me and I will look it up at work. Just need engine serial number. Should be a fun project with great rewards, ain't too many of those around. Dieselnerd brings up a good point with the air compressor which reminds me if it has one to have you look closely at the front gear cover for cracks as the combined weight of the compressor and pump bothered on some Ford and Freightliner trucks as they were not braced well enough. If you find a Ford with the hydraulic style booster rather than vacuum you might save some work. You could use a blocker plate where the compressor goes and mount existing p/s pump elsewhere. Only other thing I can think of for now is the flywheel housing. It may not be correct for transmission that you want to use. All depends what it came out of. We have several bread trucks with 4BT/Turbo 400 combinations that I could use to get part numbers for flywheel and the housing for example. It is not that hard with the serial numbers from your engine and the engine that has the right equipment on it. Glad to help if you need it. Mike

You will probably have to change out oil pan.

My ISB 5. 9 (freightliner) holds 17 quarts while my Mule( B5. 9 )holds 11 quarts ( depending on year of engine)

I love it!

All the stuff that bolts onto the block is different... . but other than that we are driving around with an engine rated for upwards of 59k pounds!!

This is a bolt-on affair... . we just have to look for the right stuff... . and be careful that the gear case isn't cracked like Mike pointed out.....

Keep this thread going... . lots of good info here!

Yes there a few thing to watch for, but if your doing a conversion anyway... you can expect some modification. The B5. 9 in our bus has no air, it is all hydralic and basically the same as whats in my truck except its gray and the manifold does come out and turn down which makes the turbo mounted kinda different. Remember anything is possible, I'm sure you can make it work!

Unfortunatley, I couldn't make the budget work to get it at this time. Thanks for all the info though. I just got my second job and will be starting next week so we'll have to see where I am sitting when school starts again and then maybe I will be able to buy it.
