My '98 24v 5-spd (98K miles) develops an unusual hiccup when making quick left turns. It is like hitting the rev limiter on a motorcycle... but at only 1100 rpm.

Here how I can replicate the hiccup:

1) Truck is stopped, waiting to make a left turn in front of moving traffic.

2) Quick start with moderate-to-heavy accelerator input coupled with moderate left turn to "squirt" between oncoming cars.

3) Truck will begin to move (about 1000-1100 rpm) then will hiccup for about a 1/2 second. It feels like two seconds when you're in the middle of the oncoming lane!

4) The engine has always caught and recovered.

5) It sounds like the Cummins is "down" several cylinders, as though several cylinders momentarily quit. The noise it makes sounds like a quiet, audible burp.

5) Hiccup is often accompanied by a small puff of white/grey smoke from the tailpipe.

I have noticed this hiccup for the last six months/15K miles. I thought I was imagining things after the first few times that it happened. Over time, I started to see a pattern at the same intersections during my commute.

Here's what I know: truck has original lift pump and injection pump, age of fuel filter makes no difference, may occur during both left or right turns (I think the same thing happened once or twice while turning right. )

What is this? A software glitch? Has anybody had similar hiccups?
