first start after setting for and extended period of time, engine misses for about 5 to 10 seconds, with alot of white and blue smoke out the exhaust thenit will smooth out and no more problems till sets it sets again for long time. is this maybe a injector leaking? thanks for any info.

The fuel system does not hold pressure for long ,so when starting up it can take those few secounds to reach equiliztion and also check to see if your air heater is working. that could extend that symptom . Also you might want to fill in the info on your truck so its easyer to answer ??? go to control pannel and fill in info in truck .

Truck Is A 96 4x5 Auto, its Warm Here In Miami, this Just Strarted In The Last Two Weeks. cant Get The Truck Profile To Show On My Posts. air Heater Is Working Also, but Still Its Misses At First And Then Its Alright The Rest Of The Day.

My 95 ran that way from day one. It did not have to sit for an extended time, overnight my garage was long enough.

The dealer pop tested all injectors when it was still under warrenty and replaced two of them. The problem remained.

After 10 years of this, I upgraded to a set of 215 injectors. This fixed the problem.

Just dumb luck.

Your down where it is warm. I'd check the simple stuff first. Check the fuel return line, it might be going bad. Replace it with approved marine grade hose. This is a symptom of pressure bleed off, and will act like this. Check fuel pressure, change fuel filter, drain the water, change fuel vender's. White smoke? low timing. Bump it to around 15*. These are simple things you can do your self.

My 98 is doing the same thing. It it idles really low (@600rpm),runs rough if you try to give it fuel, and only does it if it sits for more than 4-5 hours. If you hold the brake hard and floor it in gear (mine is an auto) and let off when the turbo starts spooling it will not act up again until it is shut off and sits for another 4-5 hours. Really nice thing to do to a cold engine! Just replaced lift pump, runs alot better but had no effect on this problem. Have an Overflow valve on order.

What KAlder said ,is what I was thinking about the overflow valve , sometimes you can take it out and stretch the spring lengthwize and put back in this would be a temp. thing that might last 1 start maybe longer but if it works then you would know , do a search here for info on doing this and where to get one , I do not remember if Geno's sells them or not , they are a sponser of this site . But by all means check the cheap stuff first , also try some injector cleaner sounds like it could also be a pour spray pattern that will not burn until it heats up .

Well got my overflow valve in, still runs like crap. Does a 98 have the PITA rubber fuel lines? I searched all over that thing with a flashlight and a mirror and couldn't find any. the only rubber lines I found were the ones from the frame rail w/ the quick connect fittings and the rubber elbow from the L/P to the fuel heater. I thought they were supposed to be behind the F/F housing. Mine has 180k on it. bought it w/ 170k want to adjust valves maybe that e'll do it. I need a bigger dart board, I keep missing it!

Feel underneath the intake manifold, behind the fuel filter canister. Its about 8" long. I changed one for a fuel leak recently (original hose) at 170K. I've seen them go at 70K too.

Search for posts on the pre-cleaner/fuel heater after changing the return line. Common place for air leaks that can allow a bit of prime loss and the condition you describe.

Good luck

Andy

Wberry, does yours seem like it is missing on the same cylinder(s) when she's doing it? mine sounds like it is. I'm thinking I have an injector or two bleeding into the combustion bowl on the top of the piston and it takes a few seconds to burn off the excess fuel (lots of white smoke). I have been wanting to bomb this truck, but am waiting to see if santa brings me a winning lottery ticket or a lump of coal. (I don't think that a lump of coal will buy much of a slushbox!)

yea,it puts out alot of white smoke till it quits missing and then it will turn to gray and black. im thinking its one or more injectors also. ive got a set 370s just havent got around to putting them in. kind of waiting to get enough green stuff together to get a dtt or ats trans rebuild, and another plate,191 dv,turbo, exhaust. put the banks kit in when i got this truck and before i learned a thing or two from this site. the banks kit helped but its overpriced, hoping trans holds out till spring, then the fun will begin.

If the fuel lines are bad the engine will be hard starting when cold. Upon starting it will have white smoke followed by blue smoke and run rough while it is smoking, then smooth out and run normal.

You will love change these little guys too!! :-{} :{ I would have first aid kit handly for the knicks, scratches & scrapes.

Thats why you only use the marine grade fuel lines with all ss hose clamps. Also a good time to upgrade the starter contacts.

crabman :)
