the manual says to remove transmission transfer case and then remove engine . If it makes life easier I’ll do it . Also thinking it may be easier to drop the front axle a few inches

I think I would take a long look at the transmission/t-case before I removed it. Unless you need it out for repairs I would leave it bolted in the truck. All you need is about 3" of clearance to clear the input shaft. I have not ever removed a Cummins out of a Dodge but the 500# NV5600/t-case combo is more than a handful. I do realize your NV4500 is lighter, but still....

To remove the transmission you have 2 drive shafts, 4x4 shift linkage, vacuum lines, rear mount/crossmember and the dang floor board/mats, I hate that part:D

Trying to properly line up a 500lb transmission on a transmission Jack is much easier than trying to line up a 1Klb engine hanging off a chain.

The chain and hoist is doing the work. If we just use weight to determine the job, not messing with the transmission/t-case combo will save 33% work. Not to mention 4 hours of R&R v/s 30 minutes of stab time. The offset weight of the t-case always causes an issue with the transmission staying level on the transmission jack. Removing the t-case first is an option but is more work too.

Choices are good:)

well we’ll just see I don’t want to have to do it ever again if I had an extra 2 grand I’d pay some to R&R the engine . I like the rebuilding its the pulling and putting it back . And there is nothing fun about pulling a transmission
