I noticed the rpm was 2000 and speed was about 73mph in Auto

and stick was rpm was 2000 and speed was about 70mph both were 3. 73 rear axle ratio

The auto transmission then should get better mileage?

2000 at 70 is exactly where my tach points. The slightly lower RPM on the auto will probably not result in any increase in MPG because it takes more power to run the pumps in an auto. JMO.

I agree with GCross, the auto loses too much power getting to the cruise rpm to gain any mileage. Most posts I have seen on the 04. 5 and up the 6sps seem to get better all around mileage. Just my impression from reading way too many forum threads.

BTW with 48re, 3. 73 and 315s 2000rpm = 78mph. Still doesnt get better mileage than a rower.

Forget about mileage, very little difference in a couple hundred rpm. If you are towing and run into any kind of hills you need to be running more than 2000rpms or the rpms just start to slowly go down, till you drop a gear.
