Sounds like your fuel system swallowed a gulp of air. Mine used to do a similar trick when the fuel level was below half. It ended up being a pin hole that was worn in the fuel tank module pickup tube by the sharp tip of a self tapping screw. Mine would wait to do it at inopportune times, like when there was no place to pull over. My solution was to keep the tank more than half full till I figured it out. You might want to look over your fuel delivery system for leaks before getting into the tank. Only other thing it could be is an electrical problem to the shut down solenoid, but then it will usually just shut down, keeping the idle up won't help. All this assumes that all three of your fuel filter/screens are clean.
