Dumb Question....bio Diesel?????????

I have an 08 3500 Quad 4x4 Bighorn, on Thursday it started sputering and ruunning like it was out of fuel. Then on the overhead console came the message "Catalyst Full, see dealer". Truck only has 4400 miles on it, I just came back from a 300 mile roundtrip highway (7% mountain grades) road trip on Tuesday. ******* says it needs new turbo, puts it on and calls and tells me everything is "ok" come and get it. So before I am to the end of the stealers drive the SES comes on and I get the same message on the overhead. So back to the service writer and they try to "clean" the turbo out and reset the computer. No dice. So it gets to spend the weekend at the ******* until they can get a new particulate filter. I never idle this think, try to drive it like I stole it. What a POS. I absolutely hate being the R&D for a product that is not ready for public consumption.

I drove a Ford (2000) PSD for 200,000 miles and never had an issue til the clutch fork broke (another corporate blunder) at 75,000 miles, but I knew it was coming after being active on Ford Diesel. Com, now the Powerstop.com.

I was reading issue 60 of my TDR last night and see that other owners are experiencing the same issues. Lemon law here we come.

Who is the dealer? Sounds more like it might have been mis-diagnosed more than being a "POS". If the DPF is plugged the turbo is not going to make any boost, even if the de-rate had not occurred. The first clue would be the overhead saying it is full. You have to fix that first before you start chasing any other problems. Also your truck was built in 2007, so do you know if the dealer flashed it to the newest software before you got it?

You know, the dealer is Power Dodge in Phoenix, as far as the flash, the paperwork is in the truck (not in my possession), but I do know they reflashed it last week and nothing changed. In fact, when I picked it up the tech said it checked out ok on his computer, but 2 minutes later it went back to the error code. Very frustrating.

Be carefull where you buy fuel in Phx. The QT at 51ave and I10 was still selling lsd, last I checked. I've seen new trucks fueling there all the time. there may be others selling lsd. Just my 2 cents.

I prefer to buy my diesel at Flying J, but have been filling at a Fry's lately. Does lsd mean "low sulfur diesel" and thats what the 08 requires?

Once again coalsmoke, you obviously don't have a whole lot of experience with other brands. I drove the Ford "like I stole it" and it only got better with time. Now a gasser, you need to to make sure and break it in nicely, but diesels are made to work. Once you get past the 500 mile mark, load em up and haul ***. But obviously Dodge has made the same fatal mistake that GM made by trying to mess with an already proven product and botching it with their own mods. And oh, did you graduate from High School? or was 8th grade it for you?

Oh, I see, you're a Canadian, that explains it all. A want to be American.

Is this your way of trying to flatter someone? Why don't you begin by maturing a bit:rolleyes:

lsd is low sulfur but the 07. 5 and 08 requires ULSD which is ULTRA low sulfur fuel !! if you have used low sulfur fuel , there's no wonder you have problems !!!READ THE OWNERS MANUAL . i hate to see people complain about their truck but , don't take the time to read the manual to learn how the thing operates .

I understand the ultra low sulfur diesel thing, ****ing Dodge should not worry about 2010 emissions, they should conform to 2008.

Coalsmoke, at this point I refuse to spar with a lesser opponent. EOC.

Cute, we were sparring? I was just calling it like it is, if you happen to be repeatedly out of line or flat out wrong and are rude about it, don't expect anyone on here to hold your hand.

phxpsd seems like such a glans to me. Glad he seems to be leaving.

My thoughts exactly, a Darwinian thinning of sorts:-laf

Returning to the original subject... ...

Personally, I think it is a bad idea to simply shut the engine down without knowing whether it is in a regen mode or not and that is likely to be the case without aftermarket gauges.

I have seen my EGT remain at 600* - 800* at idle, in park, on several occasions. I don't have any more technical information than any other owner but my guess is that means the engine is in the regen mode.

I am worried that Dodge figures the engine and components will last beyond the warranty period with hot shutdowns caused by the regen mode with owners/drivers without gauges unaware. Engines or components could begin failing long before the normal life expectancy of a Cummins engine but after the warranty expires.

I discovered a new piece of info last week after I started this thread. I started to shut down and looked up at my pyrometer and observed 600* egt that wouldn't cool as I let it idle. I didn't want to get back on the road and drive it so sat and tinkered with it for a few minutes. I discovered that if I raised the idle speed using the "fast idle" feature the regen process appeared to terminate but it would heat up again as soon as I attempted to idle down again.

If I disabled the cruise control/fast idle mode and let it idle for two or three minutes I discovered that the ECM would increase idle speed to about 900rpm and apparently continue regen mode based on high EGT in the 600* - 800* range.

Any dealer trained technicians out there who can shed any light on this?

Warning!!!!!!

Well this thread sure went off of the beaten path. So let me put my two cents in to this equation.

Either keep it on track or I will remove your post(s) and start issuing strikes. For those of you who don't like that and think this site sucks. It's pretty simple..... stay off of it. Wow that's not hard at all.

So keep the personal attacks out of the thread. I hope I am making myself extremely clear.

Thank you,

Thank You!!

How difficult could it possibly be to have an indicator light to signal a regen taking place? Maybe even a switch to allow the driver to start one at will. I know all of this has been gone over before but what could possibly prevent them from doing this?I am assuming that some aftermarket programer manufacturers could make something like this for people who want to keep their trucks"green".

Holy Toledo!!!i find it hard to believe that i'm the ONLY one who can actually HEAR the regen process happening!!!???..... what a switch... . at 59y. o. (almost) if i am sitting still at idle,i CAN hear the "mild roaring" in the exhaust system, similiar to the furnace or hot water heater on a RV... . if it worries you, wait until it stops!!!... if i feel i need to exit straight away,i just kill the engine and don't worry about it... . life is too short to wait on Regen:-laf

drive it like you stole it,let it cool a little... . remember, the turbo is water cooled as well as oil cooled... and shut it down!!!! i'm close to 13k on my '08,and have yet to have a problem. i've had 1 code stored... "illegal key used". i tried starting with the so-called valet key... my bad... . enjoy your truck and pray for lower fuel prices, but changing websites is NOT the answer... . GOOD LUCK:D... ... ..... TOM;)
