What the Dealership owner can do...

I put the pedal on the floor to make a pass, going about 60, at 80 I lifted off, and the pedal stayed on the floor, and the motor kept pulling. I turned the key off, the motor turned off, and the trans stayed in gear. (6 spd auto) When it got down to about 45 mph, I turned the key on, and it lit, but didn't rev up, held steady at about 1200 RPM in Drive, even though the pedal was still stuck on the floor. Seemed to be a 'limp' mode, got off to a safe place, and it came down to idle. Dash was showing CEL and ETC. I turned it off, and it shut down.

Everything under the hood looked OK, I pulled the pedal off the floor, and it seemed to cycle OK.

Figured nothing else to check, so I turned it on. It fired right up, no warning lights, and everything appeared to cycle thru with no problem.

Drove it to work, about 1 mile, then home 12 hrs later, about 14 miles. No problems, no warning lights.

Any thoughts on what happened?

37,000 miles, mostly used for towing or traveling, not usually a commuter.

Was it stuck on the floor mat?

The reason it stayed at 1200 is likely due to it being WOT when you turned the key on, probably a fail-safe.

If the pedal was actually stuck it would seem to be mechanical. Could be in the linkage of the throttle or may even in the apps inself. Weird. Unlike the Toyota issue, you had enough sense to correctly and safely deal with it. Truck driver - Toyota driver, nough said.

Something similar on my '05

My '05 did something similar the other day. Idling up the driveway without foot on pedal at all. Suddenly, tach and engine go to 1500 rpm. Bumped the throttle with my right foot and it went back to idle of about 775 rpm and stayed there. Keep in mind, my foot was not touching the go pedal at all when the spike occurred. When I did bump the throttle to see if it would go back to idle, the go pedal was in the idle position. No futher irrational behavior.

I will be observing behavior going forward, just in case. I truly suspect it is simply a computer blip.

It was resting on top of the floor mat, I have those heavy duty rubber slush mats. I believe the throttle is all by electric. I have a day off coming up, and am gonna check it out. I don't have anything under the dash that interfered with the pedal or linkage.

What was strange, and that I forgot to mention earlier, is that after I lit the motor back up, and was limping off, even though the pedal was on the floor, if I pushed on it, the motor would rev up a little, and then come back down. seemed to be making the trans hunt up and down for the correct gear, didn't seem to be making any power, no problem braking down the speed into the parking lot.

As far as the accelerator sticking, never quite understood how some of these things happen. The one in Cal with the off duty cop driving his family in the rental was an exception, one of those cars that had either a push to start or proximity start.

in below around 40 or 30 degrees the engine has a warmup mode the computer shuts off 3 of the 6 cyls ,and raises up fast idle to around 1200 to 1500 mine did it ,,when i go n visit my kids n grandkids ;;in ny at christmas !no foot on brake in park doors closed when it happens all newer cummins have it in there computers since around ?2000year model

The 3cyl idle is only a 2nd gen feature, and takes approx 15* F or lower to activate. At approx 32*F the rpms will go up.

The 6. 7 doesn't have 3yl fast idle, but at 32*F it will go to 1,000 rpms after 2 minutes of stationary idle, and at approx 15*F it will go to 1,000 rpms instantly at startup.

my 06 has it standard my 98 didnt but the ecm went under guarantee n the new 1 they put in did it around 2000 they put it in at first it scared me thought i lost a couple cyl or injectors called n it had all the up grades of the year they put the ecm in ,

I had something very similar happen truck took off up to 80 and then I hit the brakes hard and it nocked it into a limp. The dealer said it was a floor mat that came into contact with the fuel pedal sensor. They told me when it happened, the duration, and number of times it happened. Big brother knows all.

Figured it out. I had the 'oil change required' display come up, and when I went to reset it, the pedal stuck. I got out, looked closely at the pedal, and the elbow of the pedal was caught by the edge of the floormat. They are the deep slush style mat, and it had slipped over to the left, so that the pedal was coming down next to it, rather than on it. I can only figure that getting in and out had pushed the mat back to the right, so I couldn't see it bind, when I looked before.
