Need some help!!!!!!!

The former owner of my '97 had a 3 guage A-pillar pod installed at one time. Was removed when he sold it. Now I have a replacement pod to install & wanted to know if there was an easy(?) way to remove the A-piller so I can Back drill the attach holes into the new pod? There are (4) existing attach holes aready in the A-pillar & would like to use them. Or do I search for a replacement?

Hello DSpringstead, I just installed a two gauge pod "A" pillar in my truck. In the instructions we are warned to have a new a pillar cover in hand as the clips on the old one will most likely break off. One of mine did, the other broke on one end only. I considered glues and found the testors liquid plastic glue works wonders on these broken parts. I not only glued the two black plastic pockets onto the back of the a pillar, but I also found that it would work on the new gauge pod from Geno's Garage. I used some silicon adheasive in the middle and the testors liquid glue around the edges of the new cover to the old a pillar cover. It worked great without any little clips to come loose. I clamped the pieces together and let them dry for 24 hours before continuing work. Good luck, the placement and gauges look great.

lawrence47... ... .....

I called the Dodge dealer to find Dodge does not support the part # for the A-pillar trim (they no longer make them) So where do you get a new one? Did you have to go to a hobby store for the testors glue?

Also where did you locate your temp probe? There's so much debate as to "where". I got a new Mag-Hytec pan that's tapped for one but by what I read it's not the best place to be for the accurate reading.

Hello again DSpringstead,

The auto manufacturers only carry parts for about 15 years so you might not be able to find a new one. The only hope would be a Dodge dealer that has NOS, that is new old stock on the shelf and good luck finding it. There might be an aftermarket supplier for these items but they won't fit as nicely as the original. Auto recycling yards can offer good parts most of the time but as stated before, the pockets melded to the back of the "A" pillar trim normally break off. Ask the yard to remove one for you and save the parts that break off.

The plastic model glue I speak of is the newer liquid type that comes in a small square bottle. You can find it at most hobby shops or places where plastic models are sold.

I purchased my two gauge "A" pillar from Geno's Garage as well as the two gauges that I installed in it. The gauges came with the probes included so not knowing what type of gauge you have it would be difficult to suggest a place to aquire a temp sensor. There are places like Summit Racing that can offer generic sensors but will it work with your gauge? You will have to determine that. You could also contact a distributor of the gauge you have to see if they can provide either information for obtaining a replacement or offer a replacement sensor.

As for the temp sensor positioning, some people install it in the oil cooler line just after the transmission and before the cooler. I believe for my situation the oil pan will do just fine. Again, you will have to decide what will work for you.

I hope that the information I have provided is of some small help in your struggle. Good luck!

Hello TRowatt,

Yes, Union Gap is a much quieter easier pace of life than the Greater Seattle Area. I purchased my 96 Dodge because my wife and I want to travel. We recently purchased a 29' fifth wheel trailer which we hope to put to good use soon. I have been preparing my truck for the work of hauling the trailer. Since I am a retired e-tech/maintenance mechanic I would like very much to avoid problems on the road. To that end I have been reading the threads, enjoying all the great information, and getting the truck ready. I must say that the local injector shop has been very helpful installing the #8 fuel plate and tuning the engine. I am close, a remanufactured transmission will be the icing on the cake. I am struggling a little with whose transmission to go with. At the present time I'm considering a Goerend transmission with a torque converter that has a 15 blade impeller rated for a stall speed 300 rpm lower than stock. After a conversation with Andy it sounded like a very good match.

I hope that you were accepted to our modest fire department and look forward to meeting you someday if that is our destiny. Not to put out a fire though ;-).

I assure you that the info you've given has been invaulable. The gauges I purchased were from Geno's garage, the Autometer Phantom II series all with probes & a 3 pod A-pillar. The reason I asked about the trans probe is all the info on placement. For me it'll be "in the pan". I entered a search for "what is torque converter stall speed"? & read a really good article. I've just had mine rebuilt & added a Transgo shift reprogrammer. I stuck with a billet TC with a stall speed of 1600. Acts like a new animal. Getting just a tick over 20 Mpg.

Next are all the engine mods... ..... What was your thinking in refurbishing your injectors over new ones?

Hello again DSpringstead, Ron at FIS assured me that if he rebuilt my old injectors with new performance nozzels that he could save me some bucks and I wouldn't need anything more if I'm going to stay in the 250hp range which I plan to. I can push these nozzels to 300hp as a future option if I find I need more power while towing our Fifth wheel trailer. I would like to take life a little easier now that I'm retired and I'm not going to be in any hurry while towing our home on wheels. The vote's still out as to just which way I'm going with my transmission. I have time to decide as I don't quite have the money together for the remanufacture of the trans. I'm curious about what gas mileage I'll see with the fifth wheel as I haven't towed it any distance yet. I towed a flat bed trailer with a tractor and impliments to Idaho for a sale and managed about 20 before the mods. I'm hoping for at least 18 to 20 mpg after the mods with that heavy fifth wheel.

Automatic upgrades

Hello RPLamondon, Am I to understand that if I purchase the automatic transmission from a later model 6. 7L it will bolt up to my 5. 9L 12 valve engine? Can you give the year range of vehicle that I would be looking at? 98', 2001, 2005 etc. Sincerely, Larry.
