Equivlent for Mopar ATF +4 transmission fluid

I am getting ready to service my transmition and was wondering what kind of trans fluid people were using. I know that the Mopar ATF +4 is what the manual calls for, but it is kind of expensive. Is there a alternative to this?

The ATF+4 is full synthetic and is what you should use. I buy it by the gallon from the dealer for $16 and no warranty problems. That's less than I pay for Mobil 1 for my wifes car. You also use it in your transfer case and power steering reservoir.

You can get the filter from Geno's or the dealer. There may be a few other places that have them too. I would be prepared for 8 qts for the transmission (just in case) and 2. 5 qts for the transfer case.

If you just drop the pan and filter, 6 qts. Gasket is reuseable, too.

I am not too worried about the warrenty with 230000 miles. Just wanting to know if there might be a cheeper but still effective oil that I could use.

Valvoline Maxlife will work. I used it in a customers 01 with no problems & he uses his truck really hard. I believe the truck had 145k on it @ the time. I did a full service on it including a flush.

I've read a few times on this site about ATF+4 being synthetic and I'd like to know how anyone came to this conclusion.



I just bought a few gallons and read the label and it doesn't say anything at all about being synthetic.



I also asked the parts manager what the deal was and he told me it is not synthetic but it offers synthetic like performance.

Amsoil ATF says it meets ATF+4, but I'd stick with the dealer supplied stuff through warranty. Amsoil was $21 for 4 qts, don't know how that compares to dealer stuff. Not that I use it in mine or anything, mine's still uinder warranty.

Its not full synthetic per Dodge's web site. Only improved friction modifiers.

NO!!!. Different additive package/formulation. I wouldn't do it.
