Check the connection of the cable to the transmission. Mine came loose and wore the pin off that comes out of the 90° "differential" that goes from the transmission to the cable. The pin is replacable so you don't have to buy the whole speed reduction/increaser kit. This little 90° gear set calibrates your speedo to the model of your truck(rear end ratio, tires etc. ) At a speedometer repair shop the pin was $1, the speed reducer was $80 plus they needed the number off of it to be sure of the ratio. Ya right after 300,000 Km?
Also, the nut on the final drive out of the transmission/xfer in the yoke could be loose. Give that a good torquing if the above is OK. I don't know if this is true on the W, but the D it can be problematic.
Hope this helps.

This morning the speedometer stopped working for a while. It would sometimes pulse but then die. Towards the end of my commute, the needle would read 55 mph and then lower but would die and come back. This has happened once before but only for a few minutes and then came back so I didn't bother. The gauge never reads in 1st gear either. Any suggestions?
