I've seen several posts regarding different
aspects of Espar heaters but I haven't seen
anything about Webasto heaters. Does anyone
have any experience with the Webasto? How
about price comparisons? What about differences and similarities? The weather is
starting to get a little colder and thoughts
of a nice warm truck are becoming a little more serious now. Thanks for any info.

Gus - Hello from Anchorage. I too am interested in one of these heaters. I have never heard of the Webasto brand. The Espar seems to be the only one anyone talks about. So back to the top in hopes of some comment.

I have a Webasto in my '93, and it works great. I bought the truck used so I don't know all the details. However, the original owner had it installed in Fairbanks for something like $1,000. The service manual lists the US dealer as Webasto Heater Inc. 1458 E. Lincoln Madison Heights MI 48071 (313)545-8770.

My friend has a Webasto in his '95. I worked on it when he had some problems with it. It seems like a nice unit, and his problems were due to improper installation and what he did to correct it. The unit he bought was BIG and he mounted it under the box of the truck to the frame rail. The whole unit was in a stainless steel box. However, he mounted it with the igniter on the bottom (which you should never do). The igniter ended up full of fuel and soot deposits which shorted it out and burned the igniter fuse. Then, after the fuse burned again, he installed a auto-resetting circuit breaker which then fried the printed circuit board. We got it figured-out and working properly. I don't know if Webasto makes a smaller unit, if not, I like the size of the Espar (designed specifically for the Ram).

Searching thru the many Webasto web sites I found they come in all sizes and options, including remote control. They say that there is a model for every application, you just have to call. I sure would love to have one of these or an Espar, but the high price is hard to justify when an AC outlet is handy.

That is a good price. Can any one with one of these tell me how hard they are to install? Do you have to drop the fuel tank? I am assuming it is similar to the Espar? Where does it mount? Thanks.

Am told by Webasto tech that it installs in 1/2 the time as the espar, without having to remove the starter and other componets,Yes that is a very attractive price!!

Was the only data I could find. If someone has better links or good info please post.

It looks like the Espar, at least the D4, has several advantages
3 settings vs 2
slightly lower fuel and amp usage, especially on low setting

The Webasto has 25% higher output on the "high" setting, and seems to win in the cost category. If the Webasto really can be installed in 1/2 the time, it would be a winner, but right now there seems to be a lot better information readily available on the Espar. There are probably other Webasto models, so my comparisons might not hold up. I hope somebody closes the information gap; Choice is Good.

http://www.suremarine.com/body.html The model TSL17 at the bottom is the one for the Dodge,I think you may need more than the heater unit Carl found to complete it. Click Kit Contents to see what I mean. This is a marine supply their prices are way out of line.

Hello All,
Been way to busy to even log on lately. I thought I would give my . 02 on the ESPAR installation. I have no opinion on the other heater so it may be just fine:

I installed my ESPAR at a gravel pit. (i. e. just the tools in my truck, no lift, no clean garage, etc) We did not have to remove the tire and we did not have to remove the starter. Sure, doing so may make the install easier but I'd hardly recommend making the choice on just that issue alone.

The high quality kit came with Dodge specific instructions. It has mounting plates, fuel tank pickups, and a specific wiring harness fabricated for our trucks. UPS broke a part in shipping and ESPAR fed-x'd the replacement at no charge to me.

Carl, I love your website. BRAVO!!

I see we have some new rules, I hope they improve the experience for all!

Guys i think you have gotten to rely to much on the internet, all info cannot be found there or anywhere else,if you are really interested do all your research formulte your questions and call the vendor,if they do not answer your questions and feel uneasy on the purchase, simply DO NOT MAKE THE purchase! I try to be a thourgouh as i can when setting up these deals, there are almost always options you can add to anything, but the webasto unit itself is priced the way we have it listed, and works fine in 10's of thousands of trucks(mainly big rigs)! So call them if interested if not interested then do not worry about it! Carl

Guilty as charged! Problem is, by the time I get home from work, the Internet is usually the only place "open". But I agree 100%, we shouldn't judge products by how good their web page is, or do they even have a web page. Searching the Internet, I only found one reference to the quality of the Webasto (except for ads), but it was a very positive reference about the high quality of the unit. My apologies if my earlier post seemed too skeptical just because I was still looking for more data - we appreciate your efforts Carl!

When I searched the net for info on the Webestos I found tons of info, but most refered to marine or had no details. One thing I did find is that Carl found the best deal by far, thanks.
HC,Northern Lights had over 50 hits under Webestos heaters.
