Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Where is my oil going???

Well it is time for true confessions.
I installed a new amsoil dual oil filter system on my ETH and soon after I was puking oil everywhere, I mean all over the engine the steering assembly, diff, you name it it was everywhere! #ad

I talked with everyone in Amsoil that ever had anything to do with the dual filter system and they kept saying "not the system" causing it must be something else.
Well I finally went out to see Jim Leonard (our local cummins guru, expert, answer man, etc) and guess what I found out. When I changed the oil I did not empty the bottle the engine breather hose goes into(14K on the truck couldn't be that much in the bottle right??) Well you got it, the bottle was full and had plugged the end of the breather hose, so the engine puked out more when the engine couldn't breathe anymore #ad
#ad

I know everyone cleans the bottle out every oil change, but I thought I would share with you what happens when you don't.
Okay I'll go to my room! #ad

Mike. . it takes some of us longer to learn than others. . I'm with you. . need a good lesson now and then

Man I think I will remove the bottle. My 99 only left slight traces on driveway and undercarriage. Seems like a pain in the U no what. I did notice the different configureation on my 2001. 5 and wondered about just that. Now I know.

Mine has been puking oil for a while. I guess I need to check the bottle too. It's going to the dealer Monday cause the stereo and the dome lights quit--I checked all the fuses, lets see what they say.

Mike,

I had no idea the bottle needed to be emptied after every oil change #ad
#ad
#ad
. I have 18,000 miles on mine and about 5 oil changes. The last time that bottle was looked at was to determine where the smell was coming from and that was at the first oil change #ad

OK guys... time for me to sound really stupid. What bottle are you talking about? I changed my oil at 7500 miles. Added the Amsoil dual bypass (BMK-15) and never emptied any bottle, and I have not had a problem yet. What I am I forgetting?

Thanks

Kev

LOL, I thought a few of you would get a honk out of my bottle. Oh the lessons we have to learn!
Gary, man you know how to graphically beat a man down #ad

K-Arts, the bottle is attached to the engine right above the steering box and the engine breather tube runs into it.
Cliffman, I am real surprised you haven't had the same problem I have had, maybe I been running mine harder #ad
#ad
or faster even #ad

Thanks for the help Mike... but I am stil kinda confused on what this box is? Is this something that I need to empty every oil change? What exactly is this box? Yes this is my first diesel, so I am learning as I go.

Thanks for the help

<font color=blue>Your beyond all help Kevin.....

Hehe, there breather bottle is on the front of the engine. Open your hood and look down at the front of the engine. Coming off the front cover you will see a tube that comes out and bends downward. If you follow it you will see it leads to a lil black bottle. That is the imfamous breather bottle. I haven't cleaned mine in 11,000 miles. Figure I'll get it this next oil change.

Does that clear it up or you still confused? #ad

Mike this may seem like a stupid question but what is the difference between the 01 ETH engine and the first 98. 524V to come out? just curious
Thanks Dave

Mike

On the newer Rams the bottle is right behind the radiator and picks up water from the road and the fan blows the oil back under the engine. I extended the hose and moved it to the rear about 3 feet. Call ne and I;ll show you.

Checked my "bottle" today---a little over 15K and it had about 1/4 inch of really black oil in the bottom.
Interesting thing though was that it had four holes (about 1/4 inch diameter), in it. Two were right below the shoulder of the bottle and two were down about 1 inch. . Thus the bottle would never get full and block the in tube. You would just start to get the spots you would get without the bottle. Its an '01 ETH DEE

The first thing that I did to my ETH was to loose that breather bottle and re-route with 3/4" heater hose, keeping a downward flow, to it's final destination, near the transmission. I placed a piece of 3/4" "L" shaped PVC on the end to keep it pointed down and away from the truck. This has been working well, although I have read several posts in regards as to which type of hose to use for extend life of same. I cannot believe the amount of "oily mist" that exits from my re-route and now there's no more stink in the cab. Is there any reason not to loose the breather bottle, you have me wondering if I missed something.

Yeah, losing the bottle is the way to go mine is gone. Thing was the breather hose extended too far done in the bottle, so it did not have room to breathe.
DaveD,
The major difference between the 98. 5 24V and the ETH is the fuel pump, the 01 has an all new design. Not sure what else they changed. To get more power they probably just changed the timing, fueling curves in the computer to give us more hp. These engines can put out a whole lot more then they do from the factory.

Kevin,

That oil catch bottle is only on 2000 and up trucks (I think). My 98. 5 just drips on the driveway. I rerouted it back by the transfer case so the stink wouldn't come into the cab.

Geno's Garage did it right on this one. They have a really well done relocation kit for for this problem and its in their new catalog. Bigger bottle, with a filter and drain valve. Mines going on today.
Bye-Bye leaky gaskets, and oil over the engine!!

Well, my bottle was full too, dealer says its 'normal' for it to puke oil. Looks like I better call Geno's.

The Geno's Garage relocation kit really worked out well. Mount it right in front of the left front tire, there's plenty of room to mount it to the inside of the wheelwell liner. After mounting is complete, tie the hose back to the neg. battery cable and it won't move around on you.

Crazy Horse,
Thanks for the tip! Need to get one and get it on. Haven't lost any oil since taking the bottle off, but won't be long before it drips in the driveway.

Is there any reason to keep that bottle after you relocate, other than the occasional oil drip. I relocated mine for 1/4 the cost of Geno's kit (sans the bottle) and it works great
