Has anybody ever use these ? Are they any good ? I just got off the phone with Baldwin Filter tech support and they said it filters 3 Micron and has a capacity of 18. 2 grams for about $12. 00. I talked to fleetguard about filter FS19579 and theres filters 10 Microns of a capacity of 18 grams. Geno's sells them for 11. 95+ shipping. Baldwin sounds like a better filter.

Ran Baldwins for years in farm machinery with no troubles. Switched to Wix 'cause the supplier is closer. Baldwins are OK in my book.

Has anyone gone online to check... or does Cummins O. K. them ?

We ran Baldwin water and chemical filters exclusively at the newspaper I retired from - all good stuff as far as I'm concerned - but never used any of their automotive stuff as far as I know...

We used Baldwin filters on a few pieces of farm equipment. Didn't have any problems with them. My Dad uses them on his International based hay delivery truck. I may order one or 2 from Geno's.

EDIT!!

Just got off the phone with Robin at Geno's. She said Geno's doesn't carry Baldwin fuel filters and I looked on the website and they are not listed. ANyone know of a place I can get one and a part number?

Did they happen to quote an efficiency at 3 micron? Even the FS19579 will filter 2 and 3 micron particles - it just doesn't do it very well.

Ive been running baldwin on my 8 6. 2 and my 01 CTD good price and get the job done but I had to run to the cummins dealer for the boss and stockpiled some fleetgruad filters... bye bye baldwin

3 oil

2 fuel

that should hold me over for awhile

I'd also recommend checking the flow/restriction rates of both filters. If I remember correctly, the stratapore is supposedly known for it's high flow rate. As Ryan stated, checking if it's 3 micron absolute or 3 micron nominal is key.

Ask and yee shall receive Grasshoppa :-laf

I sent Baldwin an email this morning inquiring about that filter:

Email:

"This filter is referenced for use in heavy duty Dodge pick-ups with the Cummins 24v diesel engine. Could you please tell me the filtration level for this filter in microns? Thanks for your time.

Reply:

PF7654 has a 3 nominal and 9 absolute micron rating.

Thanks for the inquiry. "

To me, that doesn't scream 3 micron filtration. I didn't ask about flow rates either.

I suggest you go to fleetguard.com since they are a subsidiary of Cummins. They have info on there showing that Baldwin doesn't meet Cummins specs. If you have a pump failure and go in for warranty with a Baldwin filter on the truck, what do you think will happen?

Stick with the fleetguard. If one of the piston cooling oil nozzles gets clogged you better have a fleetguard or NO warranty.

I do believe that this is wrong. This is where the Magnuson/Moss act protects your butt. Cummins can not require you to use one of their filters or void your warranty for using a filter made be another company. And as stated, Cummins owns Fleetguard. That makes requiring you to only use Fleetguard products in your Cummins or you will void your warranty against the law as stated in the M/M act.

Got the money for the lawyer you'll need to inforce the M/M act?

Not trying to be a smart***, but fleetguard works for me. Oo.

Joe D is right. Stick to Fleetguard filters. Having worked on Cummins engines for 36 years, I have seen failures of engines useing other than the prescribed brand filters. Economizing in the wrong direction is risky. The warranty was cancelled. Its simply not worth the gamble.

Well I was useing Baldwin filters, which I have never had any promblems with. After reading CPG, hes right its not worth the gamble.

Chris

Phloop, why risk it? For a 9 micron absolute vs 10 micron? We also don't even know if the baldwin has comparable flow rates with the stratapore. Again, the magnusson moss act doesn't protect you, lawyers do. As we all know, lawyers are expensive, as is time. Legally, I think that if Cummins did require you to use their filters, that would be an antitrust law violation, not MM. If they voided warranty coverage strictly on the basis of using an aftermarket part, that would be MM.

Mr. CPG,

You have quite a bit of experience with the Cummins Engines. Could you please share some of it with us?

These, new, HPCR engines, both Cummins and Duramax, share the Bosch Fuel Injection System. Both seem to be having a fair number of injector failures. It has been suggested that, possibly, the lack of enough fuel filteration is the cause of these problems. Filteration down to 1 or 2 or 3 microns is, sometimes, mentioned as being the answer. Does this make sense, to you? What are your thoughts?

Also, what are your thoughts regarding fuel additives and the, apparent, lack of lubricity in the new low and soon to come ultra-low sulphur fuels? Most of these additives address the "water-in-fuel" issues, also. Most of them either demulsify or emulsify the water. I know you don't want one that uses alcohol to deal with the water. Do you have a preference in this regard?

Thank you, for your opinions and suggestions.

Come to May Madness. Cummins reps will be there to discuss technical and engineering of the engine, 2006 product developments. Fleetguard will come to talk about filters. We are trying to get a Holset rep as well.
