I have searched the forums trying to find out what is going on with my transfer case but could not find much. I have had a pac brake installed for a few months now and it is working great but lately when decending a grade in fifth gear with the brake on or off it will pop into neutral. After comming to a complete stop i can then put the transfer case back in gear. I know this problem is not rare because by buddys 99 does the same thing. Does anybody know a fix for this problem, besides holding the shifter!?

thanks

Anybody?

Has anybody had this problem? Detent springs not strong enough? Any suggestions? I would hate for this to happen while hauling a heavy load!

thanks

Sounds like the xfer case needs to be rebuilt. Usually a transmission popping out of gear is caused by worn bearings which allow a shaft to wobble.

Joe, it sounds more like a trans issue to me than a transfer case problem. I had the same issue and it turned out to be the fifth gear nut was backing off. You can fix it by dropping the driveshafts, pull the transfer case out and take the rear cover off the trans. The fifth gear nut is right there and you will be able to see if its backed off any. Get a new updated nut at Dodge for around 45 bucks and after you get it torqued back down take a chisel and peen the shaft behind the nut to keep it from backing off again. Others have tack welded theirs but in case of future R&R I would peen it with a chisel instead. Be sure to get fresh oil before you tear into it if doing it on a weekend. Not a bad time to change transfer case oil too. Hope this helps, Chris

How about checking the adjustment on the TC shift linkage? I would also go put it on a host and check that everything is bolted together correctly, transmission to bellhousing, TC to transmission, motor mounts, rear cross member etc etc. SNOKING

I never thought the fifth gear nut could cause the transfer case to pop into neutral, but its worth checking ill have the whole setup out shortly to install a new clutch. Has anybody rebuilt these transfer cases? Wheres the best place for gaskets etc. ?

thanks
