Exhaust brake in

I reviewed the various exhaust brakes on the market for the 2003 and after a lot of consideration decided to go with the Jacobs for warrantee reasons. A couple of days ago my dealer advised me that DC was backordered on exhaust brakes by several hundred units and it would probably be a long time before it would come in. I told him to put the order in anyway. Today he called to tell me that the brake was in. Huh???



It will be my first warm weather project. Oo.

Casey, was there some top secret type of info required to get the brake @ the stealer or are you just plain lucky?! Ordered mine on 11/11 when I took delivery and still nothing!! By the way did they get you for the price increase or not? Maybe that's my problem? Congrats!!

I installed mine last night! The only thing left to do is to tap the switched hot wire in the v-fan connector. I didn't have the propper pin tool to remove the pin and make the splice.



The installation was pretty straight foreward, and the instructions are verry very good ( 98 on a scale of 100). It took a while to get set up, remove the front wheels and wheel liners and remove the batteries. Probably the hardest part was installing the vacuum pump. There aint much room there and I could only get 2-3 clicks per stroke with my gearwrench (tm). So you just have to lean over the fender and make about 150 or more short strokes on each of the 4 mounting bolts. OH MY ACHING BACK! I strayed from the instructions once, that is when I ran the wires from the switch on the shifter. It took some time, but was worth the effort to work (and I mean work) the switch wires into the shifter boot. In the end you have only about 3-4" of wire exposed and it won't even require cable ties to hold it in place. Looks neat. Tidy neat, not cool neat. :-laf If you do this make sure the wires are laying flat and are not twisted when you start working them into the boot. I also found it easier to pull the grommet out of the firewall, poke a small hole and start the wires through, then reinsert the grommet.



Can't wait to splice that wire and try it out. listen to it go

I installed my switch (just the switch) today. Going to do this project a little at a time when weather permits. I looked at putting the switch wire through the shifter shaft opening in the boot as well but it seemed too tight for the wires to go through. Maybe it was too cold. How did you get sufficient opening in the boot to start the wires? Also did you have to loosen the exhaust system hangers to get the old elbow out and the exhaust brake in?

Yes I got nailed with the price increase. I am as surprised as anyone to see that thing arrive in a couple of days. I thought I would be lucky to see it by the end of February. Maybe they allocated a certain number to Canada and the list was short? Don't know. The dealer gave me $500 off the list price Canadian. Not that bad I guess. I like the quality of the kit and warantee will not be an issue if something goes wrong.

Take a straight pick and push it in between the shifter and the boot, then push a wire in beside it. I did the yellow wire first. once you get all three started pull from the bottom and push from the top. if the wires drag the boot down hold the wires from the bottom and pull the boot up. You get the idea. Slow and steady. When I got to the black cover I used a small screw driver (carefully) to get it started and continue. When you get it in you can drive around, flip the switch, and go .



Iwas in the garage, but it was in the mid 20s (F) last night and I had to work with the door open for a while. Brrrrrrrr ! I was nice to be out of the wind though.

Didn't have to loosen exhaust brackets. The elbow slipped off and the brake slipped on. Getting the v clamps off was a bit more difficult.

Fireman, I did as you suggested but since it was REALLY cold out I just popped off the shifter boot and the shifter shaft and brought the whole thing inside. Once it was warm it was much more flexible and it worked like a charm. The installation looks factory now. Thanks for the tip.

MMeier - I really really really like BD Power brake, I just want a Turbo Mount and near factory support, but, I really really really really really am getting tired of waiting too, so I may call BD and chop the exhaust and put one of theirs in.

Thanks to Fireman (He gave me the part number), I tried to order the shifter switch to retro fit my old 2001. 5. Cummins Pacific said that the part is not available yet as a separate part. It only comes with the kit for now.

Exhaust brake and high idle?

If you are using the exhaust brake to warm up the truck what happens when the truck goes to high idle? Does it turn off? Or does the exhaust brake keep the temp high enough to stop this from hapening?

For the Cummins/Jacobs brake, it stays on when the engine runs at high idle after starting. The engine will continue to run at high idle until it reaches a certain coolant temperature or until you hit the accelerator pedal or clutch.



The exhaust brake will stay on after the engine warms up and switches itself to manual idle. The brake will eventually switch itself off when coolant temperature reaches somewhere between 175 and 180 degrees F. If the coolant temperature drops below this range, the brake turns itself back on to keep the engine warm.

Does that mean that my coolant temp hasn't exceded 180 lately? When driving (engine warmed up), when I stop and sit there idling in neutural the brake will be on. I had assumed that when stopped and idling the brake would not oerate if the engine were warmed up. Maybe it's just too cold right now. Living in the south I don't have winter guards.

BTW for everyone else. My brake turned on going downa hill with the cruse set today. Kinda freaked me at first since it was he first tme it has happened to me, it just hissed a coupe of seconds then turned off before I could figure out what was going on. Works as advertised. Cool!

That is what it sounds like to me. It is normal for coolant temperature to be below 180 if the engine is not under a heavy load.
