Well, I was finally able to get the enclosed gooseneck race car trailer I wanted. After the first long tow I decided that it would add a factor of safety if I were to install an exhaust brake. I normally work on all my race cars, so the install didn't look too bad. However, work is keeping me really busy, so I thought I would just take it to Cummins and let them do the work. The service department at my local Cummins branch didn't have any pricing for installation in the "old trucks", and didn't even offer to look it up and call me! So, I thought I would install it myself. I know I need to change out the exhaust valve springs, but is there anything else considered major? Can I rent an on-head valve spring compressor? I have one for a straight six Datsun, but I don't think it will work on the Cummins. I figured installation time would be about a day or two.

E-brakes are not hard to install. I used a KD brand valve spring compressor, which can be had at NAPA on the installs I have done. It's the type with a handle on top that threads down and works pretty well. As far as renting goes it will depend on your local rent center. The main thing to be real careful about, which I'm sure you already know is to make sure you have each piston on TDC so you don't drop a valve.

You also need a long extension to deal with the header pipe. Other than that it's an easy job with what's in your tool box.

Take your time and it's not hard. You might want to consider changing all 12 valve springs. Not much more work or money. Then you can do other things, like gov springs and not have a problem.

I did #1 first to see how it goes then did 6, the hardest one, so the rest would be easy. went 1-6-5-4-3-2. Make sure you don't over tighten the header pipe, had a friend crank down hard and had to replace due to leaks.

Springs are the most time consuming part of Ebrake install. I did them on Saturday then slammed thru the rest Sunday morning.
