i just put in a jake exhaust brake, the one that d. c. sells at the dealership. i finish my install and jump in to take my "new" ride for a test i get her up to about 60mph with a loaded goose neck and flip the switch, in stead of hearing that wonderful sound that i have been dreaming of i hear this god awful hissing noise like i just pulled the drain valve on my air compressor tank??? :mad: :mad: :confused: is this normal:confused: is this because i have a 5" straight pipe:confused: please let me know what to do:{ :{ the brake works good but almost embarrassed to turn it on:( :{

Mine sounds a little different than I thought it should. What the heck, it works real good. Makes me feel a lot better.

A straight-thru fiberglass-packed muffler may reduce that hiss without eliminating the enjoyable diesel rumble on accelleration.

I have the Jake also. It does sound funky at lower RPMs but run her up in RPM and she sounds just like a dream. The owners manual for the brake suggests getting as close to 3200 RPM as you can without going over. Mine at 2500 RPM sounds just like a true engine brake, just like the big boys weighing in at 80K. I used to be a comercial driver so I know the sound well.

AKoperdak, r u running a muffler? i was thinking that a muffler like Mark B. said might work but was wondering if anyone knew before a spend the cash :confused:

Yes I am running a muffler. I like to think that the J-Brake sounds like air brakes when I am at low RPM, it seems to help when the darn thing sounds so goofy at stop lights and such.

Andy

It's an Exhaust Brake ... . Not A JAKE brake :D You should hera mine . . 4" remote brake wth MAJOR exhaust leaks. Going to the welder on saturday.

Thats funny becuase the box that my brake came out of says Jake Brake. Jake is a brand name. The brake types are 1) engine brake 2) exhaust brake. Unless you replace most of the top end of your engine (for engine braking) you will have to settle for the potato in the exhaust (exhaust braking).

From the Jacobs Vehicle Systems website:

"Jake Brake® is a registered trademark of Jacobs Vehicle Systems. The term "Jake Brake" is sometimes incorrectly used to refer to compression release type engine brakes in general. The term correctly refers to all of Jacobs Vehicle Systems retarding products including Jacobs Exhaust Brakes and Jacobs Driveline Brakes as well as Jacobs Engine Brakes. "
