Good stations to fuel at in Virginia

The guys on the VW TDI website are ignorant to anything that is not in their owners manual or to what a select few say is allowed to be added to their engines.

I want an exhaust brake on my little VW TDI... .

I want some honest data from folks in the know as to what components of the engine/etc. are placed under more stress and so forth.

Other than the exhaust valve springs... this seems like an easy BOMB... . and could be the opportunity for a vendor/manufacturer to make some easy cake. **HINT, HINT**

TDI Exh brake!

I don't think you can justify an exhaust brake on a TDI, they don't have enough HP:rolleyes:

But if you insist... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . cut a 12" diameter hole in the floor and stick your foot through it, should work:D

Andy, Scott was getting a VA box for me that I'm going to try out... . do you have something different? :D

Fred (a. k. a. "Dad"), you kill me!

Matt,

That is the same one. Scott was talking to me about it the other night. I will send one up to him for you to try.

Are you coming down to MIR this weekend if Scott and the gang come down?

Andy

Andy,

I'm still in panic mode here at work... . trying to get all the software up to date so that it can be shipped. So my schedule is unfortunately not just the weekdays... .

On the other hand... looking forward to doing some testing with the TDI. :D

Matt

one off of a chevy 6. 5 diesel should work if you have larger pipes. it is 3" i think, and if need be, machine a few extra holes in the butterfly to reduse the backpressure if it is too much in stock form. could be interesting...

Matt,

Have the exhaust pipe come out the front of the car as well as the back. Wire in a valve to blow exhaust out the front to slow ya down.

I also like Fred's idea:D

I was just going to buy an old Navy boat anchor and toss it out when needed... but they weigh more than my car does... ... :D

Fred always does come up with the best solutions... .

I'm just going to look for a 3" remote mount... . I really don't care who makes it. But if the 6. 5L versions are cheaper... then that's cool too. Then I'll have to keep my Dad's paws off it so he can't install it in the 6. 5L Tahoe!

Matt

matt, those TDI should be carrying more than a few thousand pounds at the extreme max... hehe. it's your car. actually, i do see where an exhaust brake would come in handy w/o a trailer.

get that thing straight piped, i'd love to hear it!

I have a used (40K) BD remote mount 3" complete w/backpressure gauge I'd sell. I bought it from another TDR member a while ago but I never got around to installling it.

Kurt

Tom: It's already straight-piped! Now I just have to get rid of the CAT! :)

glhs: Nice 'handle'..... I used to be into Chrysler 2. 5L Turbo engines BIG time... . then I went diesel. At least I'm still turbo!

I PM'd you for more info... .

Matt

I used to own a small fleet of Isuzu NPR's. The ones with diesel engines all had remote exhaust brakes. I bet there are a bunch of them in the salvage yards out there. I'm pretty sure they're 3".

You make one of those Honda exhaust tips out of a 5lb coffee can, but instead of cutting the lid off all the way, you leave about 1" uncut. Drill a hole on the other side and tie a string through the hole. Mount the exhaust tip and run the string up along the floorboards and back through the fire wall to the go pedal. When you get off the gas, it pulls the flap closed, makes  sounds, and provides back pressure. Works for me!

Hi guys,

Interesting this should come up. I saw a nice looking new Jetta yesterday and as he pulled up, I heard that familial diesel sound. He said it had twin turbos and if he took it easy would get 50 MPG? Is this true? ( he also said it was hard to keep his foot out of the turbos and he only got around 35MPH then)

I told my wife we need to drive one of these. She has been looking at Volvos and these are about the same as the S60 in size. What do you think?

Excellent idea as the coffee can is very light, weight is a big concern as some of the exhaust brakes can be pretty heavy and any added weight can become a big issue on hills specially if younger Matt is going to do some kind of towing:rolleyes:

Then again he could go on a diet and loose 30-40lbs if he still wants the heavier brake.

Dad.

This will work

and is only $23, click here It is a dash controlled valve for bypassing your muffler. Instead of venting one outlet to the atmosphere plug it up. You could also use it to switch in-between straight piped and muffled depending on how much stealth you need.

Bill: you kill me! That's hilarious! I never thought of using one of those things... . until now. :D

Dad: FWIW... Wheaties and StraightSixJeff can both attest to the fact that I lost at least 5 pounds on Saturday night. :-laf

I'm not planning on towing with the car... . I just want to raise a few eyebrows. ;)
