Exhaust Brake switch for 48re looks gaudy.

Heres a photo of the Jacobs E-brake switch for the 48re. I think it's foolish and looks out of sorts. I would prefer something like this http://www.ronthebusnut.com/detailDisp_EXH-B SW.html recessed into the dash.

Put it on an old style headlight switch on the floor and operate it with your left foot. That is what I have on my 2001. 5 and I did it on my 93 also. SNOKING

I am thinking of adding one to my 06, but The switch looks like hell on the gear shifter.



On my 98 I had the BD wired to a 3 position, center off switch. when the switch was up, the brake would only work when my foot was off the fuel pedel and on the brake pedel. Center it was off, down it worked every time I let off the fuel pedel. After while I always drove it so the Brake switch turned it on (up position). Just tap the brakes and the exhaust brake would come on. I think that is how I would hook up the Jake if I bought it.

See, that stinks, I am having the e-brake installed tomorrow and have never seen a pic of the switch until this thread. Thanks TDR, curse you DC. Nobody at the dealer knew how the switch was mounted or what it looked like. None of the literature shows the switch and now I am psyched about the brake but dreading that horrendous thing on my already ugly shift lever. It looks like the split shifter knob from a '72 chev 2-ton, and the fools want THAT mounted inside my fifty thousand dollar truck. Way to go bone heads #@$%!

A dash mounted switch should be a pretty easy mod after installation. At least you have the option of getting the exhaust brake now. I've heard they work pretty well with the auto.

I am going to go out on a limb and say the switch looks fine IMO. . just not where they put it, that absolutely stinks in a big way.

If it were me I would consider making a bracket to move it to the right corner of the seat where my hand naturally drops to. Possibly something that mounded to the seat frame with some cable slack for different drivers.



SNOWKING has a neat idea and reminds me I should look into the possibility of putting my dimmer there where it should be. Anyone who drives windy highways knows the column switch is awful unless you have a stick.

That's the pits! You'll be hitting it every time you use the shifter.



Only misgiving I'd have about the floor dimmer is if it doesn't have a "pilot light" to indicate when the system is hot. It shouldn't be too hard to locate a toggle with an LED in it.

As mentioned, mine is going on today. I have been thinking about a remount location but I will wait until I get the truck back to see what might be involved. If it was a little smaller and didn't have four screw heads staring at you it might be OK. My only concern would be if there was some wiring interface between the Jake controller and the Tow/Haul switch in the lever necessitating that location.



They also blew it with the new shifter. The dumb thing almost totally blocks the 4wd knob on the dash behind it.



I am trying to stay focused on the up side, how it is going to work. Hoping for the best there.

I think you'll be quite happy with how it works. Any interface between the Jake and the transmission will be through the electronics. The shift lever is just a place to mount it mechanically -- it's the same switch that mounts quite handily on the manual.

Its not as bad looking in person. I am also pretty sure I can mount it on the near horizontal surface below the shifter. I am going to pull that trim panel and hope for a void behind it. That will put the bulky portion out of site and the knob handy above the brake controller. I figure I can drill a hole to make the light visible too.

I moved my switch I had to trim off part of the mounting bracket then I mounted it behind the plastic panel under the steering wheel. The knob sticks up behind the turn signal lever on the left. I need a slightly better hole to see the LED but it is easy to access, not nearly as added on looking and works! Pics tomorrow.
