I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I have approximately 48,000 miles on the truck and use the brake religiously for slowing down and when towing, as well as warming up during cold mornings here in Denver so, I really want to get it working again.

The reed valve in the back of the diaphram body has failed. The retaining nipple ripped off. I will attach some pictures at the bottom of this to show where it came from and what it looks like. The valve looks like the valve that would be in a self draining snorkle. My pictures cut a little bit of the valve off in the hand but, I never said I was a professional photographer.

The problem I really have with this failure is that I can't seem to get any support from Cummins on this. I have called all over the place trying to get this valve but, Cummins has told me to talk to Jake. Jake has told me they supply the brake but, Cummins supplies the pump. Called Cummins again and they gave me the number to their pump supplier because they only have the pump as a complete unit, no rebuild kit or parts. I called their supplier and they informed me that they are going to do some research to see what they can do for me but, Cummins is who should be helping me out because they own the tooling that makes the parts and contracts dictate that the supplier doesn't sell to the consumer. To buy a whole new pump will cost me $500  and I'm not real interested in spending that over this valve that is the size of a nickel. The fact that I bought this truck and brake at the same time and plan on them lasting for 300,000 miles doesn't set well with me that I can expect to buy $500 worth of vacuum pump every 50,000 miles to keep the brake working.

Anyone else experienced a failure of this pump or have an idea of where I might get a valve that will work in place of this?

not when a whole new system only cost 1100. 00 . Keep massaging the supplier of the pumps they will be your best bet. I always say eliiminate all the middlemen and go to the source.

could an external check valve be used instead of the reed valve??

I'm not sure if I could fit anything in there for external purposes. The black hose that is to the right of the body in the photo's is what connects to the port but, I have it pushed out of the way. The back side of the diaphram body is very close to the pump drive so, I don't think anything else would fit in there.

Well, it appears that Cummins Mid-South has raised their prices for the new year. A new pump from them is $489. 75 and they don't have any in stock. Would have been nice to get one for under $300 but, I am more willing to take the brake off my truck and throw it away than I am willing to spend $500 every 50,000 miles to keep it working.

If I'm stepping on someone's toes here... ... . I'm sure one of the guys lurking around will share this with me..... But I've worked a deal with PacBrake if any of you wish to trade in your existing failed jacobs unit and wish a upgrade... . We have put together a special program for this... . If you have an interest drop me an e-mail.....

BTW the PacBrake unit uses an electric compressor mounted on the engine and will also power air bags, air horns... . etc...

Boy I have been sitting on the fence as to what exhaust brake to buy for my 05. I was leaning towards the Jacobs just for warranty reasons. Even though all my research tells me the Pac brake seems like a better brake. I had a banks on my 01 with no problems, but I think threads like this is going to make up my mind.

Jim- is there much of a swap out converting the actuating pistons from vacuum to pressure, or does the whole brake have to be swapped out?

I just went on to Ebay and did a search on Vacuum Pump. there is a guy selling reman pumps for different version of cummins (not this one). someone out there must have rebuilt stuff for them. There is a guy selling rebuild kits for through 02 pumps, maybe he has info. Check it out

If I can find a reliable source of parts for our pump, I will rebuild a couple of them. If for no other reason, so I can have one in the race trailer in case it fails on me again when I am out in California or something..... a long way from home and a lot of mountains to cross to get there.

I personally don't think the jacobs unit could be modified to accept the air cylinder in place of the simple vacuum chamber they have used... Not saying it couldn't be done... . just not cost effective from my point of view..... The offer I extended was a full trade in... . you ship me your brake housing... and I'm offering a new PRXB complete kit... as far as I'm concerned you can throw away the rest.....

This just seemed like a nice way to help out some of the guys who are starting to have problems out of warranty.....

Thought I would update this. My second pump died with 93,000 on the clock, two weeks ago. These reed valves are crap. I thought initially that it might have been because they are stiff in the morning in the cold and they break. This one died in the dead of summer.

I worked out a solution last night though. I work across the street from a dive shop here in Lakewood, CO. I explained what was going on and took them the vaccuum head off the pump. We dug through their self clearing snorkle valves and they gave me about six of the valves for free. They say they don't cost diddly. Anyway, I went home and broke out a pair of scissors to trim one of the valves to fit, since they didn't have exactly what I needed. Well, after re-installing the head, I now have a working exhaust brake again. I don't know how long this thing will last but, it appears to be as beefy as the first one was in each of my pumps.

Since I own two of these pumps now, I have one to tinker with while the other is running :D

If anyone else has had this problem, let me know and I will be happy to post up some pics of the valves I used before they are cut and describe how I cut them to fit and installed them. Screw buying another pump every 45K miles

Wow.

I'm glad to hear you found a solution that keeps you running.

I have to say, though, that your post, along with many others have convinced me that it was fortunate I did not make the dealer install an exhaust brake as part of the deal when I bought my truck

I'm definitely going with the Pac Brake.

What would be the possibility of using an electric vacuum pump instead of the engine driven pump? I have seen them in Summit Racing and other catalogs.

I haven't purchased an exhaust brake as of yet. I'll be going with the pacbrake when the time comes (I hope Santa is good to me. :) ).

Congrats on your source for your repair.

I have a vacuum pump sitting in the garage that is bad & I would like to repair it as well. Any info on parts source is appreciated.

I got 2 bad ones in the garage. I'll be switching to a PAC when I get the twins. The pump is now $94 so getting the electric one of $300 isn't that great of a deal. MOPAR should have just went electric from the begining.

I'll try to borrow a camera tonight and get some digital pictures of the valves I used to cut up and install. My camera died a few weeks ago :( When this problem first started occuring to me, I called everywhere to get actual repair parts for the pump, including the factory in Canada. The factory was about the 4th place I talked to trying to get them and I felt like I was getting the run around because even though I was told they made it, they told me the pumps were made somewhere in Malaysia or something like that. I got bored with dealing with them and ran out of time as I had to pull my race trailer to an event so I bought another pump. This time I had time to diddle with it and found the fix, at least for me.

I looked into using an electric pump and had the required inches of vaccuum it had to be able to pull in order to do the job but, very few places would tell me what their pump would pull so I gave up. I didn't want to spend money on a pump that couldn't pull enough to actuate it or one that made so much that the valve wouldn't open.

For those of you going with the pac brake, good choice. Had I not already be invested in this brake, I wouldn't buy it either after this type of product support. I don't mind if a part breaks once in a while but, when there is a complete lack of repair parts because the repair part would only cost a nickle and to buy a new pump is nearly $500, they can stuff it as I will not buy anymore of their products.

Which pump is $94? Is the Jacob's pump that cheap now? Either way, I'm not buying anymore but, I'm curious if that is the case that they dropped the price on those pumps. I didn't bother looking this time after the experience I had last time.
