Does anyone know it Jacobs is making an exhaust brake for the 3rd gen trucks yet?? And if so, who is selling them? Thanks, Sarge

Hey, good sight Ken. I would like to have the brake ready to go when the new truck arrives. Are you getting yours from there? Sarge

Most likely, but I'm holding off for a bit because the brake controller and 5th wheel hitch are more urgent. Nerf bars, Line-X, and e-brake are on hold for now.

Yes, but I like the fact that Jacobs syncs with the ECM... .

Yeah, I know what you mean Ken. The new truck is going to be a little pricey setting it up again. But, I got lucky with the 5ver hitch. I was able to keep my Husky from the 01', and all I need for the new truck is the frame kit, which they sell seperately. :D

I have a JAKE on my 04 3500 thay have to install a vacume pump on the engine to run the break. Thay also have to replace the drive belt with a special belt to run the vacume pump and everything ealse. I think its a biger belt because of the pump.

I have been running around with a PacBrake on my truck for about six months. It is a great brake and really slows down the truck. It plugs in to the ECM and works great. Turn it on when it is cold out and the high idle still comes on. Hit running temp and it shuts of by itself. Step on the fuel and it shuts off. Tap the brakes and it comes on about 2 seconds later. I paid in between $750-$800 for mine. It is a 4" inline brake. So If I change the turbo, I will be better off with this one.

Thats sounds like a great deal Greg. How does the Pacbrake get it's air pressure to run the brake? And is there any required maintainance on the Pac? Sarge

Sarge,

There is a small compressor that you mount on the right side firewall/ fender brace, the holes are there from the factory. Very easy install all in all. Hardest time I had was the turbo v-clamp was aimed at the engine block which was slow to get off and I was having problems putting the two wires into the ECM so I just pulled the fifty pin so I see was I was doing then they just popped in. Here's the instructions: http://www.pacbrake.com/PDF/L2032.PDF

The only problem I have had was a clogged filter on the silinoid. It just released real slow. Like 3. 5 seconds instead of instant. Pulled it out and gave it a quick carb cleaning lesson and all is fine.

Go for the pak!

Pac is going to be worth a look. It sounds like it sells for $200 to $300 less than the Jake. For some reason, i'm not crazy about adding another pump to the motor and a bigger belt. Sarge

Greg,

Where did you put your 4" in-line brake, how far from the turbo is it. I see in your signature that you have a 5" exhaust. How did you integrate the 4" Brake. I know that pac brake makes a 5" in-line as well.

I am looking at the 4" in-line pac brake myself. I am not sure how to go about it since the stock exhaust is 3. 5" from the turbo back to the muffler.

I have been thinking about buying the Banks down pipe and then fabricating the 4" pipe from the downpipe to the muffler. I would replace the muffler with a four inch as well. I would retain the stock tail pipe.

I don't know if the brake should be integrated into the down pipe or just after the down pipe.

Sarge, I had a Jacobs on my '03 and it worked well. I did not like the buzzing/rattling from the shifter mounted shift lever. It worked fine, although at about 18k miles it started to screech when disengaging, it stopped doing that at about 28K miles. I did not care for the vacuum pump either. I believe I would prefer air pressure and not alter the stock belt length. The vacuum pump actually makes its own noise that can be heard over the engine at idle.

I am leaning toward the remote mount because of the inherent or normal high EGTs that the 3rd gens produce. Not so much for swapping out the turbo. But you never know... ...

Briman,

I have a 4" downpipe from DD. I cut off about a foot and mounted the inline brake just above the crossmember. Then it goes into a 4 to 5" piece and then the 5" on out through a real big muff and a real small resonator. Then out a 6" tip. Sound is great and all of the parts were found at one stop. www.desertdieselparts.com is the place. I ordered it and it was here the same week. Not cheap like some but not as much as banks is. Give Fred a call and ask his advice. He installed it all for me. Not that I couldn't but if he does it, it is right the first time.

I mentioned money here and got my hands slapped a couple of times even after I was asked... so I don't do that here... .

We've been with them from the first... . and we used to be a Jacobs dist... .

I try and follow this board... . I own several trucks myself. . 2 of which are 01 3500 4x4 quad cab dually, 04 3500 4x4 quad cab dually... and some Fords...

Feel free to direct your questions to me... or e-mail me if you wish...
