Help, I am Overheating

Took 5er to TX from MD and Back

I am in the market for an exhaust brake for my 01 QC 3/4 long bed. She has the six speed and a 4. 10 gears, and the HO engine. The question is, which brake is better, and WHY? Do they mount in different locations? What about reliability? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sarge

I got mine from the dealer and installed it myself. 2 hours. It is a Cummins designed jake brake. Nice thing is that it does not void the warranty. Im not sure about the other. Works great. :D :D

Exhaust Brake

I recommend the PAC-Brake simply for cost. This product works well and is a good deal. I just dont think the options included in some of the other brands justifies the price difference. I do highly recommend an exhaust brake... . I think it was one of the best purchases I have made for my truck to date. By the way almost all of the brands out there bolt-up in the same spot. Hope this helps.

I have a BD brake, dealer installed. Love it. Also had the E-brake on the 97' installed by Cummins and had no complaints. It is a must have! no matter which brand. I use mine everytime I get in it, pulling the 5vr or empty.

I have the BD exhaust brake on my truck for over a year and especially while towing I would not want to leave home without it. I think you can't go wrong with any of the major companys BD, Pacbrake, Jacob (Cummins).

I just installed mine this weekend. I was planning on getting a PacBrake because of cost, but then I saw Piers was running a sale on the BD brakes for $650. Too good to pass up for me. So far so good, haven't pulled a load with it yet. Only big problem was it was missing a minor bracket that they are sending to me. I made a temporary bracket for now. .

We had our Jacobs installed as part of the deal on the new truck. Works great, and fully warranted! ;)

If you tow heavy, don't leave home without one, whichever brand you choose.

I got a Pac Brake and love it:p :p Installs very easily with no cutting or welding and the price was right $549. 00 i think:confused: I use it all day every day and would not be without it. Just wish it made more noise:eek:

If you want more noise from the jake brake, take out your filter box and attach an AH19037 filter to your intake tube for the turbo. You will have all the noise you want, beleive me. :D :D And the truck wont smoke.

If you have no plans to get an HX-40, then any of the turbo mount brakes are good. I'd suggest the PacBrake for cost reasons, plus I had one on my '96 and it was easy to install and worked well.

If you DO plan to get an HX-40, then get your 4" exhaust first and get a BD or USGear inline 4" unit (which is what I have).

e brake

I got the jocobs brake from the dealer and they installed it. That way the brake is warrantied the same as the engine, 100,000 miles. I think most of them are good but I like the warranty, since my truck only had 3,000 miles on it when it was installed it only made sense to go with the jacobs.

I have the BD and it performs great. I use the brake with or without the trailer attached. It makes going down the hills painless. Would not have another diesel without an exhaust brake!!:D :D

Hotel6: Nice to hear from you again. Note the sig. I traded the SWB 5 speed for the one shown below.

Sarge: I like the Jacobs because of the ease of installation. Price is reasonable too. It should be a factory option. Very well thought-out kit. I like that they get the throttle information from the ECM. The 1. 5 second delay is not problem for me. Others don't like it. I don't expect to use the e-brake for panic stops,... it's to maintain my speed while decending 10 mile 7% grades towing the 5er.

Got a pacbrake today. Am anxious to install it. I paid $425 + tax+one extended ****er and one spline cover. For the price I couldn't say no. It is new. Will this thing void my warrenty or something?

Installed Pacbrake today. Realized it is not interfaced with electronics, mine is manual. Install was easy, took about 3. 5 hours. Spent most of the time figureing where to locate switch. Can't wait to tow. Brings truck to grinding halt with no load and sounds great. I don't think I can leave it on in traffic or will overheat engine. Will this brake void my engine warrenty?

You can call Pac-brake and get ecm interface . will not void eng warrenty if you have auto transmission will void transmission warrenty. See old post . your signature don't say stick or auto . LoL Ron in Louisville KY:confused:     :D

DEE is DC's code for 6 speed. I called Pacbrake today and they said there is a 10 sec delay when interfaced and you need to reprogram the ecm for a cost. The rep said most stay with the manuel set up, so I will. I wanted to bomb alittle but with limited funds I chose the exh brake instead. I tow most of the time and the truck pulls strong.

just install a clutch switch

I put the Pac-brake on mine. Easy install(3 hrs. ). Installed the same brake on a Flowerpoke ,it took 8. What a p. i. t. a. . Makes me so glad I got the right truck;) :D . Mine works great. Just make sure you use it everyday. Mine started sticking closed once in awhile(from non-use),so I used the p*ss out of it for a couple of days. It's been fine for about 6 months now. The only thing I didn't like about it was it didn't have a clutch switch. I fixed that problem by installing another micro-switch at the clutch pedal. I assume this is why you guys are wanting to interface with the E. C. M. ??A clutch micro-switch would probaly be cheaper and easier. Should be able to pick one up at any big truck parts house. You'll just have to fab. a bracket. I mounted mine under one of the hood release screws. Been on there for 40k no problem.
